Railway song of the week
Born in 1937, to parents who lived in a converted boxcar, country singer
Merle Haggard recalls how an oil tanker train would "rumble and rattle the old boxcar we lived in." He recalled the inspiration for the track
"Oil Tanker Train" to Uncut magazine: "It used to come by every day and rattle the ground. We were in earthquake country, so when the ground starts moving, you look up. When that old oil train would go by - it done that every morning, it done that every evening - it grabbed your attention. That was doing it with steam engines back then.
You got the old 'choo choo' going by and you got the whistle. It added the background to life that don't exist anymore." Listen to the song by clicking on the picture:
This week in history
On the 31st March 1935, the inner circle of Glasgow's underground is converted from a cable car system to 3rd rail operation. The Glasgow Subway is the third oldest in the world after London and Budapest.

Do you have one?
Do you have a pair of microsnips for cutting thread by Expotools? The overlapping shear-like blades of this specially
designed tool make it ideal for cutting thread without the risk of
fraying. The lightweight spring-loaded tool is easy to use and makes for a useful addition to any modeller's toolbox.
Putting a hamlet on the map
Harburn Hamlet is a brand of
small resin structures, accessories and miniature dioramas used for
railway modelling. Although Harburn is an actual small settlement in
Scotland, where the manufacturer is located, some of the models that feature in
the range would be better suited to a larger village or town, so any
associations should be taken with a pinch of salt. Having said that, the
generic appearance of the models can only be viewed as a positive which
opens up the models to
represent the majority of regions.
The models themselves feature the
detail, quality and weighty feel you
would expect from any resin model. They come fully painted and
ready-to-plant offering modellers a highly effective way to add a focal
feature to their layout. Many of their models have a rural feel about
them such as the
OO gauge hen house, Anderson shelter and hay bales sets.
You can see the full range in OO by clicking here.

For layouts that portray a larger
OO gauge village or small town, you don't have to search very far to find a
Harburn Hamlet model to enhance your scene. The models cover a wide
range of locations from allotments and town centre floral displays to
their popular phone box designs including a
police box, an AA box and of course a traditional
payphone.

If
N gauge is more your
cup of tea, it's well worth taking a look at what Harburn Hamlet has to
offer. There are a few diorama enhancing models to choose from but where
they really excel is in their impressive range of
wagon loads, including coal sacks, crate loads, oil and chemical drums, cement bags, pipes and part-covered loads. The full range in N gauge is available here.
