Railway song of the week

Modeller Ian Kitt contacted us to suggest this week's song. "Stop This Train (Again Doing It')" by Kevin Ayers is a track from his 1969 debut album, Joy of a Toy. The song reflects Ayers' characteristic blend of whimsy and experimentation, featuring playful lyrics and a light, jazzy arrangement. Using the metaphor of a train journey, it explores themes of motion, change, and the inevitability of life's progression, all delivered with a touch of Ayers' distinctive wit. Ayers, a founding member of the influential psychedelic rock band Soft Machine, was known for his baritone voice, eclectic musical style, and witty lyrics. Revered as a cult figure, his solo career blended rock, jazz, and avant-garde influences, solidifying his legacy in experimental and progressive music. Click on the picture to listen to the track:

This week in history

On December 5th, 1987, the Downpatrick and County Down Heritage Railway (DCDR) opened its doors to the public. This railway operates on a gauge of 5 feet 3 inches (1600 mm) and is run entirely by volunteers. The DCDR uses track from the former Belfast and County Down Railway (BCDR), and has about 3 miles of track centered around the Downpatrick station. The railway offers passenger services using both steam and diesel engines, and also has a museum that showcases the history of the DCDR and other aspects of railway history in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Item of the week

The Multi-Gauge 4 Axle Rolling Road is a versatile tool designed for railway modellers, offering practical solutions for locomotive maintenance and testing. It can be easily placed on the track, with adjustable spacing to suit various locomotive sizes. The Rolling Road is particularly useful for running-in, performance evaluation, active cleaning of driving wheels and simplifying DCC setup. Its compact design allows for convenient use on a desk or workbench, making it suitable for both novice and experienced modellers alike.

Pre-set for 16.5mm OO/HO track, the Rolling Road includes spacers for multiple gauges, including 9mm (N scale, 009, HOe), 12mm (TT, HOm), and 14.5mm (HO, OO, ON30). It also caters to EM and P4 finescale enthusiasts. Additionally, adaptors for Marklin and Hornby Dublo 3-rail systems are provided, ensuring compatibility with classic models.

Unpainted figures

Have you ever felt like your layout was missing that extra touch of realism? Well, look no further! Let's explore some fantastic figures and accessories that can truly bring your scenes to life.

Starting with OO gauge, Langley offers a wonderful selection of unpainted white metal figures. Imagine a bustling Victorian/Edwardian station platform with their set of 10 seated figures. These charming characters, including gentlemen in top hats and ladies in long dresses, are perfect for populating your station benches or open carriages. For a more modern touch, why not add a film crew to your urban scene? Langley's Film Camera and Sound Crew set includes three men with a camera and boom microphone, ready to capture the action. And if you're modelling the 1950s, their set of six seated figures in period attire will look right at home on your platforms or in your model buildings.

But why stop at people? Langley also offers delightful accessories to add interest to your rural scenes. Their set of 10 chickens, including a cockerel, is perfect for farmyards or village gardens. For sports enthusiasts, the Cricket Game set with 15 figures and stumps allows you to create a charming village green scene. And to complete the picture, don't forget the Cricket Game Sight Screen, an essential part of any proper cricket match!

For those working in N gauge, Langley hasn't forgotten you! Their Children's Playground set is a delightful addition to any park or school scene, complete with swings, slides, and five child figures. If you're modelling a more adventurous landscape, the set of six Rock Climbers will add excitement to your mountainous terrain. And for a touch of authenticity to your railway scenes, don't overlook the Loading Gauge, an essential piece of trackside equipment.

Finally, to really bring your N gauge layout to life, consider adding some wildlife and everyday scenes. Langley's Wild Animals set includes foxes, rabbits, a badger and a squirrel - perfect for populating your rural areas. For a slice of domestic life, their Washing Line and Figure set adds a charming touch to any backyard scene. And if you're modelling the Scottish Highlands, don't miss the set of four Highland Cattle, ready to graze on your hillsides.

Remember, these figures and accessories are unpainted, giving you the opportunity to add your own personal touch. So why not grab your paintbrush and start bringing your layout to life today?
