Railway song of the week

Reader Paul suggested "Don't Break This Rhythm" from Peter Gabriel. While technically not a song about trains but more of a love song,  the rhythm will appeal to anyone who loves being on a train!

Released as a B-side to "Sledgehammer", the song was an out-take to the "So" album and was only made available as a full version on the "Flotsam and Jetsam" album more than 30 years later.

This week in history

On Friday 22nd November 1935, the first trans-pacific airmail service was launched by Pan American Airways from Alameda in California to Manila in the Philippines.  This was the inaugural flight for the service and was justifiably viewed as a landmark step in the history of aviation.  The plane chosen to conduct the flight was a Martin M-130 Flying Boat named the 'China Clipper'.  The plane arrived in Manila on 29th November after a seven-day flight that included stops in Hawaii, Midway Island, Wake Island and Guam.  The China Clipper delivered 110,000 items of post on this first trip after a journey of just under 7,000 miles.  Today the same trip will take on average 18 hours.

Enhance Your Models with Stencils

Are you looking to add realistic details to your scale models? Vallejo Stencils offer a fantastic solution for modellers of all skill levels. These flexible, translucent stencils are designed to easily adapt to various surfaces, allowing you to create authentic effects with minimal effort.  While mostly designed for 1:35 and 1:32 modellers, they can also be used in other scales to make larger signs or effects.

For military enthusiasts, the 1:35 Assorted German WWII Tank Markings stencil is perfect for adding authentic crosses and victory marks to your tanks. If you're working on a diorama with oil drums, the 1:35 Drum Oil Markings stencil will help you create realistic spills and splashes. For aircraft modellers, the 1:72 Weathered Paint stencil is ideal for depicting faded effects on metallic surfaces, giving your planes a well-worn look.

Vallejo Stencils aren't just for military models; they're also great for adding character to civilian scenes. The 1:35 Vintage Garage Sign stencil allows you to create authentic-looking repair workshop signs for your dioramas. For urban scenes, the 1:35 Street Art No. 2 stencil lets you add graffiti and street art to walls and buildings. If you're modelling a motorcycle shop or garage, the 1:35 Vintage Motorcycles Sign stencil is perfect for creating period-appropriate signage.

Texture is an important aspect of realistic modelling, and Vallejo Stencils can help you achieve various surface effects. The 1:35 Wood Texture No. 1 stencil allows you to create convincing wood grain patterns on your models. For ground effects, the 1:35 Tyre Marks stencil is excellent for adding realistic tyre tracks to roads or muddy surfaces. If you're working on a post-apocalyptic or industrial scene, the Radioactivity Signs stencil can add an eerie touch to your diorama.

For aircraft modellers, Vallejo offers stencils specifically designed for different scales. The 1:48 Weathered Paint stencil is perfect for larger scale aircraft models, allowing you to create realistic wear and tear on your planes. If you're working on Luftwaffe aircraft from World War II, the 1:32 Luftwaffe WWII Shingles Camo and 1:32 Luftwaffe WWII Spots Camo stencils will help you achieve authentic camouflage patterns with ease. These stencils take the guesswork out of creating complex camouflage schemes, ensuring your models look as realistic as possible.

With Vallejo Stencils, you can take your modelling to the next level, adding intricate details and realistic effects that would be challenging to achieve by hand. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced modeller, these stencils are sure to become an invaluable tool in your modelling toolkit.
