Railway song of the week

You may remember singer Dave Goulder from "The Man Who Put The Engine In The Chip Shop" which we recommended here some time ago. Following numerous requests, we are happy to introduce you to "The Turntable Song" from his 1973 album "Requiem for Steam". This is a based on a true story from 1959 involving a Stanier 8F derailing into a turntable. If you enjoy folk music from someone with experience in railways, this is the one for you. The video is illustrated with photographs of the time.

This week in history

The Rainhill Trials, held from 6th to 14th October 1829, were a pivotal competition designed to test George Stephenson's belief that locomotives would provide the best motive power for the nearly completed Liverpool and Manchester Railway (L&MR). Of the ten locomotives entered, only five participated, running on a one-mile track at Rainhill, Lancashire.

Stephenson's Rocket was the only locomotive to complete the trials and was declared the winner. As a result, the L&MR directors decided to use locomotives on the new railway, awarding George and Robert Stephenson the contract to produce them.

Do you have one?

Adding a smoke generator to a building is easy and will provide a very exciting addition to any layout or diorama. Designed to fit inside the chimney of any building, the Seuthe smoke generator only require a 16 to 18V power supply, meaning the accessory output from most controllers will suffice. For convenience, it is available as a starter set with oil or as the generator only.

Bringing Your Layout to Life with Backscenes

Are you looking to add depth and realism to your layout? Look no further than adding backscenes from ID Backscenes.

For OO gauge modellers, the "Into the town" backscene is a great starting point. It offers a 3-metre continuous scene that's 38cm tall, perfect for those needing a bit more height. If you're modelling an industrial area, the "Industrial OO Backscene pack A" showcases a power station complete with cooling towers and chimneys. For a more rural setting, the "Hills and Dales" backscene set B provides a versatile backdrop of rolling hills that could represent various parts of the British countryside.

N gauge modellers, fear not! ID Backscenes has you covered too. The "Distant Town" backscene offers a 3-metre scene that's 22.9cm tall, ideal for N gauge layouts. If you're modelling urban areas, the "Terraced back" backscene provides a realistic backdrop of terraced houses. For a touch of nostalgia, the "Old Mill Town" backscene showcases a charming mill town nestled in a valley.

One of the best features of ID Backscenes is their extendability. Many of their backscenes come in multiple packs that can be connected to create longer, continuous scenes. For instance, the "Old Mill Town" OO gauge backscene pack A can be extended with pack B to create a 6-metre scene. Similarly, the "Industrial OO Backscene" pack B serves as an extension to pack A, allowing you to create a sprawling industrial landscape.

Whether you're modelling a quaint Derbyshire village, a bustling distribution depot, or even the Rocky Mountains, ID Backscenes has something for you. Their photographic backscenes offer unparalleled realism and are printed on high-quality paper. So why not give your layout the backdrop it deserves? With ID Backscenes, you're not just adding a background – you're extending your miniature world beyond the baseboard!
