Railway song of the week

You cannot get rougher than Tom Waits' voice. Brilliant lyricist, great actor, whether he is in a movie or singing a song, Tom Waits has inspired countless artists.

His song Clap Hands describe travellers in a train. Tom Waits explained in the 1985 interview: "I just tried to imagine all these eh… these guys going up the A-train. All the millionaires in tuxedos shovelling all the coal into the… y'know? Everyone’s hanging out of the window, y'know? Just kind of a little… dark little… kind of a Ralph Steadman eh drawing."  Click the picture to listen now.

This week in history

On July the 30th 1900, the Central London Railway (unofficially known as the Twopenny Tube) opens between Shepherd's Bush and Bank. It served 13 stations when opened and was later extended to reach 20 stations before being sold in the 1930s.

Do you have one?

Let's take about the 12-piece stainless steel carving set by Expotools. Whether you model in clay, wood or plastic, if you need to carve details, this set is ideal. The set includes 12 stainless steel carving tools for a wide variety of modelling tasks and each tool is double-ended giving 24 different shaped heads in total. The patterned handles will also ensure your work is kept neat and accurate while the included wallet will keep your tools together and accessible.

Time to think about Christmas

Ratio Models started in the 1950s to make quality models, initially out of wood and then from plastic. Peco bought the company in 1996 and carried on expanding the range. Their kits are of very good quality with clear instructions and cover all the needed buildings and accessories you might need on your layout.

Here are some small projects in OO gauge:

And for scratch-builders and kit-bashers, some OO gauge items which will find their way on most benches, from gutters to windows and skylights:

Ratio also  has a large range of N gauge kits. Here are a few examples:
