Railway song of the week

Reader Tom got in touch to suggest 500 miles as sung by Justin Timberlake , Carey Mulligan & Stark Sands. This version of the 1961 Hedy West folk song was recorded for the soundtrack of the movie "Inside Llewyn Davis". As a double bonus, we are happy to offer you the French version released in 1962 and sung by Richard Anthony, with title "Et j'entends siffler le train". This was top of the charts in France for most of the summer, selling more than 1.5 million copies. This led him to record it in German, under the title "Dein Zug fährt durch die nacht".

This week in history

In 1965, on the 14th of June the 24 hour clock was introduced to all British Railway timetables.

Item of the week

This week's tool of the week is a handy set of fine HSS (High Speed Steel) drill bits from Expo Tools. These small drills are ideal for making precision holes in models when adapting, scratch-building or retrofitting parts or accessories. They can be used with a Dremel, mini hand drill or push-type Archimedean drill for a precision, neat finish. This set contains twenty drills ranging in size from 0.3mm to 1.6mm

Keep on rolling

Your rolling stock relies on the wheels to run correctly. Over time wheels can get damaged (or even lost) or maybe your stock is old and still has plastic wheels, causing running issues as well as being unsightly. Fitting new wheels to coaches and wagons is usually straightforward and will make a huge difference to the smoothness of the running.

Here is a selection of N gauge Graham Farish wheels, suitable for most N gauge coaches and wagons:

In OO gauge, coach wheels are slightly larger (14.1mm) than wagon wheels (usually 12.6mm except for low mac wagons):

In real life, wagons tend to travel mostly full. If you think about it, this is the reason we have trains: to move goods and passengers. So, to add realism to your model railway, you need to have loads inside your wagons. They can be coal, iron, timber or lots of other things, adding variety to your display.

Here are some examples available in N gauge:

And if you model in OO, you have even more choice:
