Modellings tips and answers - Modelling in time for Christmas - Videos

Hello

Two major events coming on the 11th of May:

First, there is the Eurovision Song Contest, a night of music, over-the-top outfits, and a sense of global camaraderie, where nations compete not just for votes, but for a chance to showcase their culture and creativity on a grand stage. Click on the pictures to replicate this event on your layout.

And more importantly, this is the return of the model railway exhibition at the Isle of Wight steam railway in Havenstreet. From 10am to 5pm on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th, you will get to enjoy more than 10 layouts across 3 rooms, as well as traders. You also have the opportunity to get a combined ticket including a steam train ride. Click here for more details.

Don't forget to read our latest modelling tips and unboxing videos located at the bottom of the newsletter.

Most images in this newsletter are clickable for more details.

Feel free to send this newsletter to your friends, family and club members if you think they will benefit from it. They can subscribe for free.

Railway song of the week

American country music songwriter and singer Tom T. Hall also wrote books so it is no wonder his songs always told a story. We are happy to share with you this 1982 recording of a song which is a lot more livelier than the record cover would suggest. No bonus points for guessing the subject matter as the title says it all: "The Engineers Don't Wave from the Trains Anymore".

This week in history

On the 7th of May 1957, USA's streamlined 'Flying Yankee' was retired after 22 years of revenue earning service between Portland and Boston.

Modelling the Isle of Wight railways

Modelling the Isle of Wight railways is now easier if you are willing to make small compromises. This train pack from Hornby includes a Terrier in Isle of Wight Central livery and 3 4 wheel coaches which are not 100% accurate but close enough for most layouts.

If you are willing to do a bit more work, the coach resin kits from Smallbrook Studio are the best choice due to their accuracy. You can get single coaches or a pack of 4 with close couplings as they used to run on the Island. They are straightforward to build and require easy painting.

If you prefer freight to passengers trains, Smallbrook also produces several wagons which were specific to the Island. Most rolling stock was taken from the mainland and modified to be used locally. The LBSCR 8 ton goods van, 6/10 ton cattle van rebuilt to be used a passenger luggage van and the LSWR 20 ton goods brake van are great examples of this.

If you love the Isle of Wight and/or buses and coaches, you probably also want to consider the great books from Terry Jones. After writing books on the history of Moss Motor Tours of Sandown and on Shotters of Brightstone, his third book is on Seaview Services. All of them are full of colour pictures as well as history of each company.

These books are the perfect present to a friend or even yourself!
