Railway song of the week

Reader Andy Thompson contacted us to suggest a 1957 British Transport Film movie. He stated that this is not really a song and may not fit in this section.

When the aforementioned request came to our attention, it was deemed prudent to convene a committee expressly tasked with ascertaining its validity and merits. This was no trifling matter to be adjudicated in haste, but rather an undertaking that necessitated the judicious application of our collective erudition.

The assembling of this conclave was no happenstance affair - its members were carefully curated from the highest echelons of intellectual society. Eminent scholars whose towering achievements had etched their names into the annals of their respective disciplines. Venerable professionals whose decades of distinguished service commanded the utmost respect. Verily, a convergence of the most illustrious minds.

Our proceedings were marked by a decorous sophistication befitting such an esteemed consortium. Over the genteel rituals of afternoon tea and biscuits, we engaged in a meticulous dissection of the request, subjecting each facet to the incisive scrutiny of our extensive knowledge and breadth of experience. Debates were, at times, impassioned yet maintained an eloquent civility – the raised voice has no place in cultivated discourse.

No empirical evaluation would be deemed complete without an exhaustive examination of every potential contingency. We left no proverbial stone unturned, our indefatigable pursuit of truth leading us through varied intellectual thickets.

And when at last, this Herculean undertaking had yielded its thoroughly reasoned conclusion regarding the matter's validity, rest assured, our findings were the issue of a process steeped in the great traditions of Anglo-Saxon epistemology. An exemplar of the incisive intellectual rigour that has long guided the discourses of Britain's properly educated class. The request's veracity was assessed through a prism of unwavering objectivity and erudition of the highest order.

Next week, we will go back to songs and decisions without committees.

This week in history

On the 31st March 1935, the inner circle of Glasgow's underground is converted from a cable car system to 3rd rail operation. The Glasgow Subway is the third oldest in the world after London and Budapest.

Do you know this exists?

Of course you probably know it exists as we have spoken about it in the past, however it is back in stock after a few months unavailability.

The Paint Shaker by Timodel mixes all types of paint in a fraction of the time that it would when mixing by hand. It produces a thorough and consistent mix every time, which is essential but can’t easily be achieved manually.

Putting a hamlet on the map

Harburn Hamlet is a brand of small resin structures, accessories and miniature dioramas used for railway modelling. Although Harburn is an actual small settlement in Scotland, where the manufacturer is located, some of the models that feature in the range would be better suited to a larger village or town, so any associations should be taken with a pinch of salt. Having said that, the generic appearance of the models can only be viewed as a positive which opens up the models to represent the majority of regions. See the full range by clicking here.

The models themselves feature the detail, quality and weighty feel you would expect from any resin model. They come fully painted and ready-to-plant offering modellers a highly effective way to add a focal feature to their layout. Many of their models have a rural feel about them such as the OO gauge hen house, Anderson shelter and hay bales sets.

For layouts that portray a larger OO gauge village or small town, you don't have to search very far to find a Harburn Hamlet model to enhance your scene. The models cover a wide range of locations from allotments and town centre floral displays to their popular phone box designs including a police box, an AA box and of course a traditional payphone.

If N gauge is more your cup of tea, it's well worth taking a look at what Harburn Hamlet has to offer. There are a few diorama enhancing models to choose from but where they really excel is in their impressive range of wagon loads, including coal sacks, crate loads, oil and chemical drums, cement bags, pipes and part-covered loads.
