Hello,
We now have more than 3000 items on our website. As stated last week, we are going as fast as we can to add the remaining 7000-odd items, however we know this will take a few more weeks at least. So if you want us to prioritise a specific range, let us know.
Making a layout interesting is all about adding the right level of details. When you look at the real thing, it is obvious that there are numerous details which we do not notice: drains, odd bricks of different colours added to a building, old cables going nowhere, dust, gravel, ... A train platform is typically a lot busier than we make it: bins, benches, trolleys, suitcases, crates, etc... And wagons usually run full rather than empty!
One manufacturer of such small and wonderful items is Ten Commandments. They make plaster cast loads and small lineside buildings such as huts and buffer stops. Very easy to paint with acrylics or enamels, and very realistic. The range is very large in OO gauge and quite extensive in N gauge. All types of wagons are catered for including specific loads for specific wagons (say for instance HBA) Here are a few examples. As usual, click on each picture for full details.
When going outside, you want to create life in your layout. Scottish manufacturer Harburn Hamlet can be very helpful there with a range of finely detailed and fully coloured items, once again available both in OO gauge and N gauge, including cameos such as a beekeeper tending to a hive. They also offer an extensive range of allotments and other gardens.
In the past we mentioned the wonderful tram kits from Tower Trams / BEC. As you know, we take pictures of the inside of boxes so you can see them on our website. Here is the quantity of plastic you get in one of the tram kits. Remember the kits can be motorised using a BEC motor.
Finally, rust is everywhere in the real life. As soon as some metal is exposed to the elements, you know it will rust. The issue is how to create realistic rust on plastic? Various paints exists, you can also use some weathering powders however nothing compares to the real thing. This is where Deluxe Materials come to the rescue! Scenic Rust creates real rust on any surface (metal, wood, plastic...). There are a few steps to follow, but you end up creating a chemical reaction that generates rust. If you want the best rust available, this is the answer.
Send us an email or give us a call to check availability or to reserve anything, whatever scale you model in. As usual, if we do not have in stock what you are looking for, we will order it for you and you will get it fast (usually within a week if the manufacturer has it in stock). We place weekly orders with most suppliers.
Remember, you can park for free for one hour on the High Street. So no excuse not to come and visit us!
Upstairs Downstairs is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am till 4.30pm, Sunday from 1pm till 4pm. We are closed only on Monday.
