This week in history

On Monday 28th March 1955, Electric Locomotive CC7107 belonging to French Operator SNCF set a new world speed record.  The record high-speed run was conducted between Bordeaux and Dax and achieved a speed of 331 Kph (206 Mph), although the track utilised for the run was severely damaged by the speed of the train.  This Locomotive speed record stood for over 50 years until September 2006 when it was surpassed by a Siemens Taurus Locomotive travelling at 357 Kph (222 Mph).  Intriguingly, CC7107 was present for the new record-breaking run conducted on the Nuremberg-Munich high-speed line.  It has subsequently been preserved at the Cite du Train Museum at Mulhouse in Eastern France.

Tool for thought

This week's tool for thought is the Long Live the Brushes cleaning solutions by Mig Jimenez.  Long live the brushes is a two-stage cleaning solution for paint brushes.  Simply dampen the brush with a little water and then wipe it in the Long Live the Brushes pot.  The mixture will then lather offering a deep clean and removing stubborn accumulations of paint deep within the brush fibres.  Once cleaning is finished simply wash the solution from the brush under a tap and whilst damp position the brush fibres back to their original shape.  Also, quickly clean away any paint residue from the pot so it is ready to use again.  Long Live the Brushes works equally well on acrylic, enamel and lacquer based paints as its cleaning solution is tough enough to remove paint accumulations but gentle enough to condition the brush fibres thus ensuring greater longevity for brushes.

Unusual cameo scenes

Interesting and complementary scene elements can create great visual diversity in a layout and are one of the most effective ways to bring a layout to life.  One of the best ways to achieve this is to populate a layout with Figures and Cameo sets.  Figure sets can directly integrate with the layout's theme, such as passengers waiting at a station or a construction gang working on a section of track.  Conversely, they can be completely separate themes from the layout.  Quite often this separate theme is a very useful approach to take as it can provide an interesting counterpoint to the operation of the layout trains and can also add great visual appeal and interest.  With that in mind, this week we will look at some of the more unusual Cameo sets available to modellers to help develop that sense of visual diversity.

In OO gauge, unusual or incongruous items on a layout are a great way to catch the eye of the casual observer, what better way to start than by integrating the Rapunzel cameo by Faller into a layout.  In keeping with the fairy story of the same name, Rapunzel has lowered her flowing locks to the ground so that her paramour may climb to her.  Hopefully, she has a strong neck and with a little bit of luck won't be inadvertently pulled through the window by the efforts of her dashing Beau!  For those seeking their fortune, what better way to satisfy their cravings than by consulting Busch's Fortune Teller to see what surprises the future may hold!  On a more mundane note, many of us will no doubt remember the days before mobile phones with a sense of wistful nostalgia, though perhaps not the inevitable frustrations of queueing for the phonebox that Preiser's intriguing and amusing Cameo captures so well.

For those developing a more rural landscape with a waterway, the Gold Digger Cameo Set by Busch could be an interesting vignette.  Our intrepid prospector comes fully equipped with a selection of pans and tools and the set thoughtfully provides a suitable supply of sediment to sift through.  With rural settings in mind, developing a smallholding scene element would be an interesting project with plenty of options for developing visual interest such as Noch's compact Sheep Shearing cameo set.  For those developing a more urban environment, the Garden Chess set by Busch would be a great choice, adding significant visual appeal to a village green or small municipal park.

Figures and Cameo sets are a great way of developing and emphasising a regional or national identity, such as Noch's Alpine Horn Players with their distinctive horns and costumes.  Cameo sets are intriguing because they are very good at telling a smaller, compact story whilst being woven into a much larger tapestry.  The Toad Migration set by Busch is a good example of this as its unusual and original theme will immediately develop visual interest whilst allowing it to be an integral part of the overall layout.  If making a striking visual impact is your forte, then few things will say it better than the UFO and Visitors from Space Cameo set by Busch.  This will inevitably capture the attention and imagination of any casual observer whilst giving some interesting options for Earth-borne interactions!  I sense a parking violation coming on as our enthusiastic Aliens fall foul of terrestrial bureaucracy!

The above-mentioned Cameo Sets are all specifically available in OO/HO Gauge.

That said, there are also considerable options for N Gauge modellers with a penchant for the more unusual Figures and Cameo Sets.  For those modelling rocky or mountainous terrains the Painted Rock Climbers by Langley is a great way to integrate a Figure Set directly into the layout.  These figures are prepainted and are configured in a variety of dynamic poses and are sure to add visual appeal to any scene.  Similarly, the Firemen to the Rescue Cameo set by Woodland Scenics will add humorous visual appeal as our intrepid Firemen strive to rescue a cat from its precarious perch.  The Robbery at Gunpoint Cameo Set by Kestrel Design is suitably unusual.  The nine figures provided are a selection of victims and ne'er-do-wells in a variety of poses that will certainly grab the attention of the casual observer.

Cameo and Figure sets are a great way to develop scene elements and add visual depth to a layout.  Unusual Cameo scenes are especially good at this and will inevitably create interest and talking points for any casual observer.  Inevitably the definition of 'unusual' is subjective and down to the individual modeller to interpret.  Cameo scenes can add directly to the overall layout or, conversely, can be employed as a visual counterpoint to the operational aspect of the layout.  Inevitably, any scene elements that are interesting and intriguing to the casual observer will increase their enjoyment of the layout.  For the modeller, the fun inevitably comes with the clever weaving of these diverse threads into the layout and the overall effect they create for modellers and observers alike.  With a large supply of diverse and interesting Cameo and Figure sets available for the modeller, why not take the opportunity to introduce an unusual Cameo into your next project?
