This week in history

On Friday 30th November 1934, the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) A3 Pacific locomotive 'The Flying Scotsman' becomes the first steam locomotive in the UK to be officially recorded at over 100 mph.  This record stood for another four years until the LNER A4 locomotive 'Mallard' set a new, officially verified record of 126 mph in March 1938, a record that still stands today as the fastest verified speed for a steam locomotive.

Tool of the week

This week's tool for thought is the Tamiya Extra-Fine Airbrush Cleaning brush.  This is a long-handled cleaning brush that is ideal for cleaning the difficult-to-access areas of an airbrush where paint residues can easily build up after repeated use.  Used in conjunction with cleaning fluids and other cleaning materials the Tamiya extra-fine airbrush cleaning brush can be extremely useful at clearing out fine loose, fine deposits that are often left behind by other cleaning processes.  Without removal, these deposits can easily accumulate and then adversely affect the performance of the airbrush.

Rubicon models

Rubicon Models are a manufacturer of plastic model kits for wargamers, scale modellers and military collectors alike.  Their signature mark is that their models are produced in 1/56 scale and currently concentrate on armour subjects from World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.  Additionally, they also produce plastic figures in 28mm which correlates with their adopted 1/56 scale.  This means that their range of products is completely compatible with other contemporary manufacturers in the Wargaming genre such as Javis and Die Waffenkammer, which is good news for those who in addition to modelling armour subjects are looking to create dioramas.  The adoption of 1/56 scale is a clever move as it taps into an existing market.  It also allows for a good level of subject detail and is especially advantageous for modellers for whom space is at a premium and modelling in 1/35 or 1/32 scales may not be practical.

Rubicon's subject matter is very diverse, not only when it comes to differing periods but also offering a good range of vehicles from the major participating powers.  This newsletter aims to offer a flavour of the range of subjects covered.

Although the big hitters are the real muscle of any army, much essential work is carried out by supporting vehicles behind the scenes.  These vehicles themselves inevitably are interesting subjects in and of themselves but are also useful components in a wide number of dioramas.  Three examples of these essential 'Maids of all work' are the Dodge WC51/WC52 'Beeps', the Steyr 1500A/01 and the Willys MB 1/4 ton 4x4 Truck, known to so many as the ubiquitous Willy's Jeep.

The Sd.Kfz.7 was a German Half-Track that saw widespread usage with Wehrmacht Forces throughout the Second World War and was even used and copied by the Allies.  This versatile vehicle is well represented by the kit.  The BM-13 represents the iconic 'Katyusha' mobile rocket launcher, operated by Soviet forces throughout WWII, its simple but sturdy design was continually developed in the following decades.  Likewise, the  M3/M3A1 Half Track represents a similarly iconic vehicle whose longevity ensured decades of service in a large number of armies.

Rubicon also offers a good selection of the 'big hitters', exemplified here by the M4A1 Sherman, the most widely used Allied medium tank of WWII.  The Jagdpanther (G1/G2) was equipped with an 88mm main gun as a 'Tank-Destroyer' and gained a fearsome reputation, although was only built in limited numbers.  The SU-85/SU-122 allows the modeller to build a contemporary of the Jagdpanther, as used by Soviet Forces as a tank-destroyer and assault gun.

Rubicon also produces a range of kits that will help modellers wishing to develop scene elements for a 1/56-scale diorama.  The Utility Light & Pole set lends itself well to a vehicle-based setting.  The Market Produce Set and Domestic Furniture Set would be good components for a more domestic setting.

This newsletter aims to offer a flavour of the wide range of subject matter offered by Rubicon Models.  Inevitably, there are likely to be items offered that will be of interest to a wide range of modellers, not necessarily just from the Wargaming and Military modelling communities.  Why not take a more detailed look at the subject range offered by Rubicon Models as the inspiration for your next project may be waiting for you just a few clicks away.
