This week in history

On Monday 16th October 1882, the 'Nickel Plate Railroad' opens for business in the United States.  Built in 1881 the 'New York, Chicago and St Louis' Railroad (NYC & St.L) was constructed to link Buffalo in New York State to Chicago via the Great Lakes.  The new railroad was soon dubbed the 'Nickel Plate Road' in the media due to its significant financial backing and the anticipated profits the new route would produce.  At the height of its operation, the 'Nickel Plate Road' operated over 4,000 miles of railroad and over 2,000 miles of road networks.  In 1964 it merged with other routes to form the 'Norfolk and Western Railway', this, in turn, merged in 1982 with other operators to form the 'Norfolk Southern Railway'.  Today the 'Norfolk and Southern Railway' operates successfully over 19,000 miles of railroad in 22 States in the Eastern United States.

Tool for thought

This week's tool for thought is the Perfect Plastic Putty by Deluxe Materials. Perfect Plastic Putty is a putty-based filling solution, specifically designed to be used on plastic models. It is quick drying and can be applied via a spatula or via a syringe for very fine cavities. Any excess filler can easily be cleaned up with a damp cloth or damp cotton bud. Once dry the filler can be easily sanded and is easy to paint. One other advantage is that the putty can also be sculpted, meaning that a modeller can use it to create additional surface detail such as tarpaulin covers on a vehicle.

More than just cars in the car park

A car park is a good feature to have on a model railway layout, they can be of any size and any shape meaning they bring great benefit to modellers, and they're a common real-life feature too regardless of era and area modelled, so what's not to like?

If you are thinking of including a car park in your OO gauge town or station grounds, the important thing to remember is that a car park is often so much more than just parked cars, and there are plenty of models that can help you achieve a convincing and interesting scene. Why not add some recycling bins, the plastic bin kit by Auhagen is perfect for the occasion. You may also want to add a little humour/horror to your scene with some traffic wardens. Of course, if you're including traffic wardens, you had better give your OO gauge vehicle drivers somewhere to buy a ticket. With a spot of paint, Peco's vending machines will make perfect car park ticket machines.

Other models that can help shape your car park include Knightwing's barrier and security hut kit, a set of 5-6 inch ready-to-plant feature trees from Woodland Scenics and a toilet block kit by Wills Kits.

Paving can be provided at little cost using card sheets by Metcalfe, a CCTV camera kit by Wills Kits will keep your commuters' cars safe while they're away and Gaugemaster's working security flood lighting will be a fantastic feature of the diorama.

Other things you can add to provide uniqueness to your car park include a Park & Ride bus service using a double-decker Leyland Olympian plastic kit by Peco, a Trolley Park kit complete with trolleys by Faller or a Sunday Market kit by Vollmer.

Of course, your car park would be the busiest and most comprehensively used car park in history if you were to add all of the models featured here, but individually, they all make a compelling argument.
