Modellings tips and answers - Metcalfe mini kits - Videos

Hello

There will be a scale model exhibition in Sandown, on the Isle of Wight, Saturday 17th of September. The range covered is large and will include model boats, railways, cars, planes and more.  This will take place at St Johns Church annexe in St Johns Crescent, PO36 8EQ. Entrance is only £1.

This week in history

On Tuesday 17th September 1901, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (ATSF) opens what is to become known as the Grand Canyon Railway.  This line is 64 miles in length and connected the town of Williams, Arizona to the southern rim of the Grand Canyon.  The line was instrumental in the development of tourism in the area.  The increased use of motor cars saw a steady decrease in numbers carried leading to the closure of passenger services in 1968 with freight services ceasing in 1974.  In 1988, Private Investors purchased the line and now operate year-round passenger services using a variety of diesel and steam locomotives.

Tool for thought

This week's tool for thought is the Woodland Scenics A200 Gentle Grips.  These grips will be a very useful tool for the modeller looking to populate their layout with a large number of small figures.  The protective tips help ensure a gentle but firm grip is applied to any figure and removes the prospect of 'twanging' experienced by many users of tweezers which catapults small parts to the four corners of the globe, never to be found again.  The extra long reach will help in placing figures or parts in difficult-to-reach locations, or for removing them as the situation demands.  For modellers who have a regular need to precisely move and place small parts r figures these grips are sure to be a very useful tool.

Metcalfe mini kits

Metcalfe has long been associated with detailed, easy-to-build cardboard kits of stations, engine sheds, houses, and other larger structures for a model railway. But did you know they also produce a range of smaller models to add detail to your layout?

There doesn't appear to be any definitive theme to the mini kits they produce, but all are of a quality you would expect from Metcalfe and can find a home on most layouts. In OO gauge, kits include models such as a bus shelter, goods yard crane, stone fountain, show jumping fences, market stalls and a platform underpass.

The list doesn't stop there either, with a pill box to enhance countryside or field scenes, a shopping centre arcade roof to alter the look of existing shop fronts, a station clock to give platforms a Victorian feel, picnic tables for pub gardens or a cafe and a choice of benches.

Whatever your miniature model requirements, Metcalfe has it covered.
