This week in history

On Friday 19th August 1921, the Railways Act 1921 was first published, although the Act which has also been referred to as 'The Grouping Act' did not come into force until 1st January 1923. Prior to the publication of the Act, there were over 100 independent railway companies operating within the UK. This inevitably led to an overlap of operating areas, duplication of some routes and other inefficiencies.

During the First World War 1914-18 the Government stepped in and directly controlled the railways which proved to be very successful. With this in mind the minister of transport, Eric Geddes proposed a series of proposals that led directly to the development of the Railways Act 1921. The Act stopped short of full-scale nationalisation but led to the creation of what has become known as the 'Big Four' operators, namely Great Western Railways (GWR), London Midlands and Scottish Railway (LMS), London and North-Eastern Railway (LNER) and Southern Railway (SR). These four Companies continued to operate very successfully until the Nationalisation of the Railways which came into force on 1st January 1948.

Tool for thought

This week's tool for thought is the 16-piece drill set by Expotools. This collection of small drill bits is a very handy accessory for any modeller requiring to drill very small and precise holes with a hand drill. The drill pieces are manufactured from HSS steel to offer good durability for the model maker. The smallest size drill bit in the set is 0.5mm with a corresponding drill bit for each sequential 0.1 mm up to the largest drill bit size of 2mm. The drill bits are mounted in a small foam base which fits neatly inside a compact clear plastic display case. For those with minimal space or who wish to equip a ready-use toolbox, this is bound to be a very useful option.

Easy Rider

With the long days of summer finally upon us, there are many who will be tempted by the great outdoors. Some will be lured by the call of the road, to new vistas and blue skies and the adventure of a new road trip. For those modellers looking to bring aspects of that 'easy rider' feel to an OO/HO gauge layout there are a wide variety of options to choose from. All are guaranteed to offer an eye-catching counterpoint to any layout. Woodland Scenics, Langley and Busch offer impressive sets that will help create that 'road-trip' vibe. The Woodland Scenics and Busch options are pre-painted.

One advantage to the 'road-trip' theme is that a number of different manufacturers have bitten the bug and they all have their own unique take on the subject. Not to be outdone, P&D Marsh, Noch and Preiser happily provide their own particular offerings catering for those who prefer their horsepower in more modest and gentle proportions. These three options are pre-painted meaning they are ready to go and can quickly be integrated into and make an impact on any layout.

Of course, not all 'easy-riders' will look to pursue their adventures with the assistance of an engine or via two-wheeled options. Some may look to pursue their journey via 'One horse-power' modes of transport. Inevitably the lure of the country, of rustic footpaths and bridleways will siren call to those perhaps of a more gentle disposition and who are looking for their adventures to proceed at a more sedate and measured pace. Additionally, there are those who will also seek to hitch along with others such as Woodland Scenics' iconic 'Hitchin a ride' set or seek the nostalgic thrills and spills of Faller's motorised 'Children's Merry-Go-Round' ride on a carefree summer's day. For those looking to model 'young-at-heart' adventurers then what better option than Langley's 'Mobility Scooter' set. For those who look to paint their own figures, our dynamic duo has the added benefit of being supplied unpainted as is the Langley 'Rockers' set.

Whatever your particular take, the 'easy-rider' theme will allow modellers to quickly and easily add a diverse selection of 'cameos' adding interest and fun to any layout.
