This week in history
On Saturday 25th July 1987, the East Lancashire Heritage Railway opens. The original services on the line connecting Bury and Rawtenstall ceased operation in June 1972. The line was reopened by the East Lancashire Railway Trust in July 1987. The current line is just over 12 miles long and is serviced by 7 stations.
Tool for thought
This week's tool for thought is the Proses OO/HO Ballast Spreader. This small plastic spreader can assist modellers in the process of ballasting a layout. The spreader has groves specifically engraved into its base to allow it to navigate HO and OO gauge track, including curves. When the hopper is loaded with the appropriate grade of ballast simply move the spreader along the track at an even pace. The three openings at the bottom of the hopper will help to facilitate the steady and even flow of ballast to ensure a good foundation for any layout.
Churches, chapels, kits & cameos
Churches are a great feature to have on a model railway because they fill virtually any size or shape of baseboard space available. They are a common feature in the real world and are full of detail and intrigue with lots of varied activities taking place during a typical week. So from a modellers point of view, what's not to like?
Regardless of the era and location being modelled, a church is one of those features that always seem to fit without the need to explain its presence or create a backstory. Creating a decent church scene in
OO gauge is easy as there are many to choose from. Cardboard kits are produced by both
Metcalfe and Superquick while plastic kits by
Dapol and Gaugemaster will not disappoint.
For those who model in N gauge, there's a detailed card kit by Metcalfe and a basic plastic kit by Gaugemaster's Kestrel Design range too.
Of course, the main church building is only half the story and many effects can be delivered through the church's grounds. There are a number of models to enhance such scenes, a few examples being Woodland Scenics or Langley's OO gauge graves and tombstones, while Busch offers a complete diorama kit to create a graveyard scene.
When it comes to figures to populate your churchyard scene, there are plenty to suit all occasions, including
funerals, weddings and regular church services, here are some
HO/OO gauge examples.
