This week in history

On Monday 17th July 1931, the Boston & Maine Railroad and the Maine Central Railroad jointly founded Boston Maine Airways. The Airline initially flew from Boston to Bangor in Maine. Boston Maine Airways was subsequently renamed Northeast Airlines in 1940. During World War II, Northeast pioneered transatlantic flights in support of the US Armed Forces in Europe. Northeast Airlines was subsequently absorbed by Delta Airlines in 1972, allowing the latter access to the Boston market.

Tool for thought

We have just noticed a link error regarding the reversible clamps we spoke about in a previous newsletter. Please click on this picture to access all the details about this great tool including a video.
This week's tool for thought is a paint pallet with brush rest and lid by Trumpeter. The pallet features six segmented sections for mixing various colours of paint and a handy brush rest to keep your work surface paint-free. The included lid will also help prevent paints from drying out should you need to take a short break from your project. The pallet has a total capacity of 12cc divided between the six 2cc sections.

Feeling hot, hot, hot!

Summer in this country may be a little hit and miss, but when it comes to modelling the hottest season of the year, there's no reason why you can't nail it every time!

Whether you are planning to casually anchor your scene to a summer month or go full-on exotic, there are models to help, and nothing says hot and sunny like fully-canopied trees. But if you fancy something a little more reminiscent of a desert region or Mediterranean resort, have you ever considered using palm trees or cacti to achieve the desired look? Woodland Scenics produces a choice of three or five-inch palm trees as well as a convincing set of various sized cactuses, all of which display fantastic detail and come ready for use.

Closer to home, there are many things you can do to add that summery feel to your layout. Preiser's HO/OO gauge 'Beach Furniture' kit includes all of the deckchairs, sunbeds and loungers you'll ever need to populate a beach or lido diorama. Add a Noch hotdog/ice cream stall to your park and a Busch 'Summer Flowers' kit to your green areas and your summer scene is sure to have a sunny outlook.

For your natural rivers and lakes, why not add a few water sport actions sets? Noch's water sports or kayak sets are ideal for this, but if you don't have any water features on your layout, Busch's paddling pool set will certainly make the most of your back gardens.

Back on dry land, a stroll through the countryside is a much-anticipated summer pastime. Faller's fully hand-painted ramblers set along with a Busch's picnic area kit will make your countryside appear populated with outdoor sun-seekers. While for an extra special cameo scene, why not add a couple picnicking from the trunk of their American Classic?
