This week in history
On Tuesday 5th July 1910, the Bernina Railway opened, connecting St. Moritz in Switzerland with Tirano in Italy, a distance of 25 miles. The Bernina Railway is one-metre gauge and boasts a maximum incline of 7 degrees and a maximum elevation of 7,392 feet above sea level. The Bernina Railway achieved UNESCO Heritage status in 2008 and is still running today. The journey from St.Moritz to Tirano takes a little over two hours and twenty minutes.
Tool for thought
This week's tool for thought is a five-piece stainless steel hook and pick set with textured wider handles for ease of use, by Expotools. Hook and pick sets are a valuable tool in any workshop or hobbyists' toolbox and have several uses including scribing, aligning small parts, aiding in the removal of O-rings, retrieving wires from hard to reach places, opening up small holes and cleaning small grooves or crevices. This set contains a mixture of five stainless steel hooks and picks with a variety of heads ensuring you always have the right tool for the job at hand and the wider textured handles will give you extra control and accuracy. Click on the picture for more details including a video of all the tools included.
Woodland's next level woodland!
Trees are a great way to represent the countryside on a model railway, and
Woodland Scenics certainly produces a fair share of
convincing models in this area. But they also produce a good range of
bushes, grasses and tufts to take your countryside scenes to the next level.
A particularly convincing model is their
hedgerow that comes in 1-2 and 1-4 inch tall variants to suit different scales. It comes attached to a long base, so placement is easy and its non-uniform appearance is incredibly effective at producing a natural look. They can be used either to create a 'clump' of younger woodland or to line a boundary or embankment, either way they look fantastic.
Once you have chosen your trees and bushes, you may find yourself turning your attention to the
finer details. Once again, Woodland Scenics has no problem in proving themselves with their
prairie grass sets. These can be used to
represent tufts or clumps of grass that have found a crevice to flourish, particularly useful if you're modelling a rocky landscape. They come in
various shades and colours including brown tipped as well as dark, medium and light green, so
a natural and varied look is easily obtainable.
If a little more colour is required, you could try
flowering or seeding tufts. Again, these are intended to be used sporadically to represent
clumps of grasses that have managed to seed and flourish. A good place to use them is
along the verge of a country road/farm track or along the
boundaries of woodland, or how about in a meadow to
create a natural or unkept environment. Flowering tufts are produced with
red or violet bloom and
seeding tufts come in brown and yellow to provide a more arid effect.
Finally, is
Woodland Scenics' edging strips. Their effect is very similar to that of the tufts in that they represent unkept grasses, but this time they are supplied in strips. The purpose of this is to recreate the parts of a meadow, pasture or field that's been missed by a plough or mower. They are extremely effective when
merged into adjacent scenery and
help your fields to appear planted (pun intended!).
