This week in history
On Wednesday
13th June 1928, tests were conducted with the first
Rail Detector Car, invented by Elmer Ambrose Sperry in New York. The Rail Detector Car, also called a 'track geometry car' or 'track recording car' is an automated track vehicle used for the
inspection of rail tracks. Using a variety of recording systems and sensors these vehicles are used worldwide to
check a number of aspects of rail integrity, including curvature, smoothness and track alignment.
Tool for thought
The MIG8022 Ammo paintbrush and tool organiser is a very useful tool for those modellers for whom space is a premium. It is compact and has up to 59 slots in which paintbrushes, pencils or other similar shaped and sized tools can be held.
The organiser is made from a strong and compact wood and easily slots together and can be disassembled with equal ease when no longer required. When in use the modeller can quickly peruse the organiser and can easily select the desired brush.
Dapol N gauge couplings and OO gauge static engines
Dapol are renowned for many types of railway related models and kits, but if you operate an N gauge layout featuring a large collection of wagons, and shunting plays a significant part in your running sessions, you may be interested to know about their magnetic couplings to add an element of automation to your operation.
Dapol produces a wide range of magnetic couplings to quickly convert
N gauge rolling stock with NEM pockets to facilitate automatic uncoupling. They are provided with
short, medium or long arms, so you can achieve the closeness of coupling you desire, and additional kits in the range take care of the
magnets required for the track. A
conversion kit is also produced that will allow the couplings to be attached to rolling stock without NEM pockets.
Most kits are available as either pairs of couplings or larger packs of five, making the conversion of larger fleets affordable.
Another surprising category in Dapol's impressive range is their collection of
Kitmaster non-motorised locomotive kits. These are model kits that require assembly and painting and come in
1:76 scale, but are never intended to move under their own steam and certainly do not include a motor!
These motor-less models might cause a little confusion for some, but when you consider that we quite happily construct models of planes, boats and Star Wars space ships all the time without questioning whether or not they have the ability to sail, fly or achieve intergalactic travel, these humble models of railway locomotives suddenly make a lot more sense.
The models are certainly detailed enough to appear on a
OO gauge layout and will
make sidings appear more attractive, but adapting them to house a motor with functional wheel assemblies is not a job for the faint-hearted, and although it has been done, it shouldn't be viewed as a cheap way to create a fully functional model. However, for a beautifully crafted display model that's heaps of
fun to build and paint, Dapol have a
good range of kits to oblige, including a humble
Pug, a mighty
Schools Class, the beautiful
City of Truro locomotive, a
Class 04 Drewry diesel shunter,
Stephenson's famous Rocket and a single-car
railbus to name but a few!
