This week in history
On Tuesday 5th June 1883, the first 'Express d'Orient' train left the Gare de l'Est in Paris for Vienna. Although Vienna was the original terminus, this quickly changed as the service extended to Giurgiu in Southern Romania, eventually reaching Constantinople in 1889. Officially renamed the 'Orient Express' in 1891, the service ran on a series of routes across Europe before finally ceasing operations in December 2009.
Tool for thought
This week's tool for thought is a 12-piece stainless steel carving set by Expotools. Whether you model in clay, wood or plastic, if you need to carve details, this set is ideal. The set includes 12 stainless steel carving tools for a wide variety of modelling tasks and each tool is double-ended giving 24 different shaped heads in total. The patterned handles will also ensure your work is kept neat and accurate while the included wallet will keep your tools together and accessible.
Cambrian Model Rail open wagon kits
Cambrian Model Rail (formally Cambrian Models) are the manufacturers of plastic kits focusing mainly on the production of
4 mm (OO gauge) wagons. Kits come
unpainted and include the body and chassis but not the wheels or couplings leaving modellers free to choose their own. Appropriate decals can be easily sourced from the
Old Time Workshop range of transfers.
Because Cambrian focuses so heavily on wagons, very few stones are left unturned when it comes to choice and there's a large range to choose from, something that's especially evident when it comes to open wagons. Examples are plentiful and include (to name just a few)
London and South Western Railway's 10 ton open wagons built between 1899 and 1912,
GWR's P22 'Herring' ballast hoppers of which 300 were produced,
South Eastern and Chatham Railway's 10 ton five-plank wagons built by both the SECR and SR between 1920 and 1925,
Cambrian Railway's two-plank drop-side wagons used to carry timber, barrels and slate far and wide from their mid-Wales base,
Cambrian Railway's four-plank wagons with optional sheet rail and used to carry lime and an
eight-plank 'Acid Jar' wagon used by 'Chance & Hunt' featuring eight permanently fixed jars.
As well as the weird, wonderful and specific, there's also a huge range of open wagon kits to create rolling stock more commonly seen on many model railways, including a five-plank end door, a one-plank fixed end, a four-plank rounded end, an LMS high-sided 12 ton wagon, a 12 ton five-plank fixed end and a 10 ton seven-plank fixed end.
