Hello,
There is no doubt when modelling we always need to
put tiny amounts of glue, solvent, paint or powder of some sort
in some awkward places. This can be plastic solvent in the corner of a building, paint at the back of a wing mirror or mud on the underframe of a wagon.
A standard brush is likely to be too large to distribute the right amount, or too straight to reach the right place, or even too bulky to go through a small opening.
We have found the solution:
microbrushes! These applicators are
very small (hence their name) and will retain paint, solvent or glue using capillarity.
No dripping, no mess. Furthermore, they
can be bent to reach any place you can think of. If you can see it, you can reach it.
Available in four different sizes, in packs of ten for a couple of pounds. Yes, you read it correctly:
10 microbrushes for £2. Have a look at the pictures below to understand what we are talking about. Note the pen is there to give you a sense of scale. If you are not on the Isle of Wight,
you can order them directly from our website.
Talking about
plastic solvent (the "special glue" that is not a glue but really melts and welds plastic together), we are happy to report that, following feedback from you, we have now
expanded the range we carry. We now have in permanent stock:
- Humbrol Liquid Poly
- Deluxe Materials Plastic Magic (able to glue most plastics including ABS, PVC, Styrene, etc )
- EMA Plastic Weld (able to glue styrene, ABS, Perspex, ..)
- Slater's Mek Pak (specially designed for styrene)
These
professional products are in addition to the standard range such as Humbrol Poly Cement, Faller Super Expert, etc... and will give you perfect results if used correctly. Note: they each have they own strength and weaknesses, and
some may be too aggressive for your needs. Before using a new solvent on your latest model,
always test on a bit of scrap first.
Please note that due to the latest postal regulations,
we cannot post solvent based products. As such, they are collection from our shop only.
Finally, let me finish with a trio of products, every modeller should know and use:
Micro Sol, Micro Set and Micro Liquid Decal Film. They will help with most transfers problems.
- Micro Set is a setting solution helping the transfers to stick to the surface without any bubble. Apply on the transfer and leave to dry.
- Micro Sol will soften the decals so they follow better any curve, panel lines (raised or sunk) or other non flat surfaces.
- Micro Liquid Decal Film will restore old transfers and avoid cracking. It will also protect home-made decals (say printed using inkjet). If you have old kits, you need a bottle of this!
All three products can be ordered directly from our website or collected from our shop in Sandown.
Send us an email or give us a call to check
availability or to reserve anything, whatever scale you model in. As
usual, if we do not have in stock what you are looking for, we will
order it for you and you will get it fast (usually within a week if the
manufacturer has it in stock). We place weekly orders with most
suppliers.
Remember, you can park for free for
one hour on the High Street. So no excuse not to come and visit us!
Upstairs Downstairs is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am till 4.30pm, Sunday from 1pm till 4pm. We are closed only on Monday.
