This week in history
On Wednesday 27th May 1931, two men, Auguste Piccard and Paul Kipfer, launched their hot air balloon from Augsburg in Germany to attempt a new altitude world record. The pair subsequently reached 51,774 feet (15,781 metres) above sea level and in so doing established a new world altitude record for human flight. During the flight, the pair were also able to gather useful data on upper atmosphere conditions and cosmic rays before safely landing on a glacier in Austria.
Tool for thought
The Gaugemaster GM619 precision lubricator is a very useful addition to any modellers toolbox. Small and compact it has a clip so that it can be worn in a shirt pocket like a pen. The applicator holds up to 10 ml of oil. The fluid reservoir is made of plastic and when sufficiently squeezed will deliver a precise amount of fluid through the applicator. The applicator nozzle is a narrow thin tube meaning that it can reach restricted spaces and tight confines and can deliver a measured amount of oil precisely where it is needed.
Extend your model choice with Auhagen plastic kits
Auhagen is a German manufacturer of plastic kits for model railways, and much of what they produce is in
HO gauge meaning they can also be successfully used on all but the purist of
OO gauge layouts. Whether or not the styling of continental models suits a British diorama is a question for the individual, but
many UK modellers are liking what they produce.
Auhagen's
station kits probably deserve the most thought before purchase because continental and UK platforms differ in style and height, however, if you're looking for such platforms, you won't go far wrong using Auhagen who produces
platform sections with or without canopies and a foot bridge offering to complete your scene.
Auhagen also produces many models to create scenes outside the station boundaries such as a
lumber yard complete with lumber, a
small coaling point for rural locations, a portable
conveyor belt loading ramp for industrial scenes, a set of
sheds for allotments, gardens or even a building site; a
draw well and a
town fountain.
And it's not just kits of complete models they produce either with a selection of kits designed to enhance other models or
give scratch-builders a helping hand with the finer details. Just a few models in this range include a
pack of chimneys, a
set of gutters and drainpipes and some convincing
gas lamps.
