This week in history
On Wednesday 17th May 1939, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth arrived in Canada to begin a State visit. Due to the significant distances involved a large part of the royal visit was conducted by train. The Royal couple commenced their visit from Wolfe's Cove in Quebec. The Royal train was pulled by Canadian Pacific Railway 4-6-4 locomotives 2850 and 2851 which earned the Class the name 'Royal Hudson'.
Tool for thought
This week's tool for thought is set of paint pallets with removable partition for colour mixing by Trumpeter. The set includes two pallets, one with a five section insert and one with a ten. The removable insert allows modellers to measure out desired quantities of various coloured paints before removing the insert for mixing. The 10cc pallets are made from a robust plastic and the detachable parts have the added advantage of making cleaning easy.
Embracing your inner naturalist!
It's fair to say that
railway modellers love their trains, and many also have a fondness for the environment in which they operate whether that be a busy station, bustling goods yard or the lush landscape of a country branch line. When it comes to enhancing such scenes, there's seemingly no end to the ingenuity of manufacturers to provide us with ways to add extra detail and dimension, and now
you can even make your cows moo!
Sound capsules are not a new concept, manufacturers and modellers alike have been using them in locomotives for many years, but
Faller has taken the concept one step further by producing a
range of under baseboard capsules to add sound to the more unusual parts of the layout. Packs contain a selection of
HO gauge hand-painted figures relevant to the sound effects being produced
as well as a speaker, soundboard and wiring that connects directly to a
12v DC or 16v AC auxiliary power supply. There are a number of sets to enhance the natural sounds of the countryside including
cows, sheep and storks as well as sets portraying
railway staff for a station environment and a
lineside crew hard at work. A switch to activate the sound effect is not included in the sets so you will have to source one yourself, but this is done intentionally as different modellers will choose to activate the effect in different ways whether it be via an automated
reed switch and relay or a traditional push to make or
on/off switch.
Faller has even made a start on equivalent N gauge sets with their 1:148 scale fully painted mooing and bleating cows or sheep packs.
Whether or not the N gauge range will ever be extended further likely depends on the success of sets already in production, however, if you don't fancy hanging around to find out, you could always add your own
N gauge station staff or
lineside worker figures to accompany a HO gauge sound capsule.
