This week in history

On the 1st of December 1909, the LB&SCR (London, Brighton and South Coast Railway) commenced operation of its very first electric multiple units. The stock, known as SL Stock, ran off overhead 6.7kV a.c. wires and operated between Victoria and London Bridge station. The units (and the line) were later converted to third-rail operation in 1928.

Tool of the week

This week's tool of the week is a hand-held mitre guillotine. This handy tool can cut wood or plastic strips up to 12mm in thickness, and cuts at angles between 45 and 90 degrees. The guillotine comes with two blades to get you started, and replacements consist of standard trimming knife blades meaning availability is never a problem.

The industrial revolution

Modelling industry is something that has always been of interest to railway modellers. The dirt, the grime and the atmosphere all provide the perfect setting for interesting railway movements within a limited space. And although many factories have long since disappeared only to be replaced with shiny new distribution centres, the subject of industry continues to remain close to many modeller's hearts. And that's a good thing, because the variety of models representing industrial scenes is huge and growing all the time.

There has never been a better time to be a modeller of industry. Beautifully crafted traditional card models such as Metcalfe's OO gauge factory have been joined by an impressive range of plastic kits. Gaugemaster's representation of a Dockside Warehouse or Grain Silo has allowed modellers to escape tradition and model something a little more modern if they wish. And the functions that models now perform have evolved too, take a look at the Fordhampton 12-16v Wind Turbine with its motorised blades, or why not combine a traditional model with modern technology by installing a chimney and adding your own smoke generator. Smoke generators are easy to use nowadays and Seuthe even produce a handy 16v compatible starter kit.

But it's not all about the buildings. Modelling life and activity using figure sets is also fast becoming a way of making dioramas as realistic as possible. Models portraying this in an industrial setting are plentiful with manufacturers such as Noch, Faller, Busch, Peco, Auhagen and Kibri all producing models to complement an industrial scene. Whether it be shelving, workers, forklift trucks or a simple set of pallets, they all make a huge difference.

Modelling an industrial scene doesn't have to mean modelling a traditional scene. Industry nowadays is so much more than just a brewery or a textiles factory, fortunately, the models produced to represent industry have evolved proportionately, so now your layout really can undergo an evolution of the industrial revolution!
