This week in history
On the 17th of August 1903, the Great Western Railway commenced operation of a bus service between Helston and The Lizard, Cornwall. The service is reported to be the first bus service operated by a railway company in the country.
Spitfiremania!
In the last year, many people have turned to modelling to keep occupied during times of isolation. Almost as many non-modellers as modellers have found themselves reaching for the paints and glue and discovered for themselves what pleasure opening a brand new kit can bring. Of course, the good old faithful Spitfire has played its part in this quest for entertainment, and although for many enthusiasts, the spitfire has always had a role to play in their modelling projects, for others, it has come as a bit of a resurgence. One thing that is for sure though, all of this spitfire action has highlighted how lucky we are to have so much choice available.
Thanks to the iconic nature of the Spitfire, there is virtually no livery, type, mark or variation left un-modelled and kits can be found depicting anything from the Battle of Britain or dogfights in the skies over Europe to Spitfires supplied to other counties such as Russia and Australia, there are even some quite unusual liveries to feast your eyes on including Middle-Eastern post-war
Israeli Spitfires and even a
pink fighting reconnaissance example, and that's just a selection of what's available in 1:72 scale from manufacturer
KPM, just imagine
what the entire range has to offer.
But when it comes to model Spitfires, it's not always just about the make, mark or model with many Spitfires having a story to tell too and
AZ Model is good at modelling them in
1/72. take the
Silver Spitfire, for example, which famously flew around the world, the late
post-war Mk.22 Spitfire that never saw action, a model of the first low back Spitfire with its
bubble canopy for all-round visibility, a
Czech Services Spitfire (who knew they had Spitfires!), a model of the exact Mk.14 flown by Australian flying ace
Ginger Lacey or a
Mk.16 supplied to Belgium and France with a Packard built engine .
When it comes to model Spitfires, they intrigue, stir the imagination, inspire and captivate, some provide us with questions and others teach us history, what more could any modeller possibly ask of their model?
