This week in history

On July the 30th 1900, the Central London Railway (unofficially known as the Twopenny Tube) opens between Shepherd's Bush and Bank. It served 13 stations when opened and was later extended to reach 20 stations before being sold in the 1930s.

Painting and decorating

Paint sets have been around a while now and typically feature a selection of appropriate paints brought together to paint a specific model such as a WWI tank or a set of wargaming figures with a particular game in mind. AK Interactive is a company that is no different and has a large range of acrylic quality paint sets aimed at specific models from specific eras or relating to specific conflicts. These sets are great for modellers as they can rest assured they have the correct colours for their model and will save a lot of money in the process. But where AK Interactive's paint sets become really exciting, is in their range of sets aimed not at specific models, but at specific effects found in a multitude of dioramas from model railways to wargames.

This includes sets that are designed to help modellers achieve realistic mud, rust, weather, dust and dirt effects on vehicles as well as an innovative set that will help you achieve realistic tyres marks on the ground. Click on the pictures for more details:

And that's just for starters, there are also sets to achieve effects such as rolling stock grime, fresh engine oil and even burnt vehicles for the modelling of war zones and rough council estates. Don't be fooled by the names of the paint sets either, the neon paint set is aimed at futuristic science-fiction figures but will do just as nicely for shop signage on a modern-image high street, the tank accessories set will give any metal equipment a utilitarian feel and the clear colours set can be used for car indicator lights just as well as church windows.

There are many exciting, interesting and useful paint sets out there just waiting to be discovered, and although their marketing would suggest they are the preserve of wargamers and military modellers, disregard this and have a look to see if there's a set to enhance your modelling project.
