This week in history

On the 19th of July 1900, the first section of the French Paris Metro opens. It was running from Porte Maillot to Porte de Vincennes.

Mixing water and electricity is great!

Now before you attempt to cook some toast in the bath, it should be pointed out that mixing water and electricity may be a great title for a newsletter, but is generally bad advice in reality.  However, Dapol have managed to find a way for the two to exist in perfect harmony (well imaginary water anyway) with their creation of a motorised OO gauge water tower with sound!

They describe the model as "bringing a little fun back into the hobby" and why not? The water tower has highly detailed features including flexible delivery pipe, etched parts, water valve, positioning chains, drain grill, tether post and frost prevention heater, but, when the mood takes you, a flick of a switch is all it takes to enable sound effects including normal or overfill operation and a selection of commentaries between an engine driver and his dim-witted trainee fireman. The fill pipe rotates 90 degrees. The models can be operated from a 12v AC or DC supply and comes with the appropriate wiring, switches and relays needed for DCC operation. The water tower comes in conical or flat-top versions with various colour options and will indeed bring a little fun to your layout.

Notwithstanding the allure the fun factor brings to model water towers, this particular product is intended as a main feature or focal point on a layout, if you like the look of the model but would prefer something more traditional, Ratio and Langley also produce nicely detailed conical water towers in OO gauge but without the whistles, bells or the dim-witted fireman.

As they say on the telly-box, other brands or types are available, and this is especially true in the world of model water towers in OO gauge. Examples are plentiful including both plastic and cardboard kits and depict many prototypes including a raised tower on supports, stone base towers, water towers enclosed by utility buildings, huge American style water towers and even the occasional weathered model too.

Whether you're looking for something simple and unassuming or a model that makes a feature of your layout, there's a water tower out there to whet your appetite.
