This week in history

On the 16th of July 1927, the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway was opened by William Lygon, 7th Earl Beaucamp. This light railway runs on 15in gauge track and covers 13 and a half miles.

Small wagons in a big way

Modelling in N gauge brings many benefits, the most obvious being the sheer amount of railway that you can cram into a small amount of space. But achieving high levels of detail in a small scale is not without its challenges especially when trying to detail rolling stock such as wagons. Fortunately, help is at hand and Peco's range of ready-to-run N gauge wagons provide a highly detailed credible solution to the problem.

These delightful models exhibit features that score highly in the detail department such as realistic brake rigging, interior details, shoes in line with wheels, body-coloured solebars (where appropriate) and liveries covering the whole rail network. Particularly impressive is the detail apparent on their private railway company wagons with striking prototypical branding and variants such as plank wagons, box vans, tank wagons furniture vans, refrigerated vans and even hood-covered wagons for a variety of aggregates.

Although there is much in favour of constructing your own models, these wagons really are something special, and when you factor in their smooth running capabilities, there is certainly an argument for giving them some serious consideration.

If you like the idea of ready-to-go models in N gauge, you'll be pleased to learn their existence is not limited to rolling stock. Although kits undoubtedly dominate the modelling scene in this gauge, examples of scenic models that are ready to plant are out there. Graham Farish produces a small range of railway related resin buildings such as station platforms and goods sheds. Harburn Hamlet takes care of some smaller models for part-use in dioramas such as their cottage or allotment sets. There are even some models from companies that are coming from a different world such as Enesco which is the parent company to the Lilliput Lane series. Although they have now discontinued their N gauge range, some examples can still be found on the shelves and features models such as cinemas and schools, so grab them quick before they're gone forever!
