This week in history
On the 1st of July 1975, the Australian National Railway Commission took over the assets of Commonwealth Railways who had governed the Trans-Australian and Port Augusta to Darwin railways since 1917.
Signal boxes great and small
When choosing a signal box, we often pick the first pretty or idyllic example we come across, but that can be a bit of a missed opportunity because, with such a large range of signal boxes available, you really can afford to be fussy and choose a model that truly compliments your layout or helps anchor it to a specific era or location. A quick search will reveal plastic and cardboard kits of signal boxes in 00 gauge from the likes of Metcalfe, Ratio and Peco with many interesting and area-specific examples including a traditional GWR signal box, a half-timbered signal box, a small red-brick signal box based on the one at Goathland station on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, a Scottish Highlands signal box based on the one at Helmsdale station on the far north line and a utilitarian 1950's signal box in all its very unidyllic austerity splendour, and that's just for starters!

Ratio probably has the biggest choice of signal boxes with some of their more interesting kits including an ornate Midland region box, a platform (or ground level) signal box and a realistically ugly, flat-roofed, wartime box along with many more. Gaugemaster keeps with their tradition of representing the south with their Fordhampton signal box, Dapol has a model to represent the East Midlands and Wills have a few to choose from but their timber Saxby and Farmer design really catches the eye.

just a few of the many signal boxes out there for model railways, so take a deep breath and take your time when choosing one so you know you have the best one for your railway.
