Modellings tips and answers -Inspiration - Signalling a model railway

Hello

Don't forget to read our latest modelling tips located at the bottom of the newsletter.

This is a message we have received from David Kay: "Last week's newsletter mentions modelling the Royal Mail - I am at it again! Attached are three photographs showing the Royal Mail depot on my layout." Click on the pictures to see them in high resolution.

This week in history - On December 12th 1953, a familiar sight on the Deutsche Bundesbahn took to the rails for the first time as the prototype for the Class V 200 diesel-hydraulic express locomotive was delivered.

In a world where space is at a premium and we desire to model more of 'a railway within a landscape' the popularity of N gauge is gaining momentum. To help us achieve credible layouts manufacturers are keen to bring us products that not only provide a solution but also exceed our expectations, and this is especially true of signals.

If you are constructing an N gauge layout of your own, and are about to embark on signalling it, then rest assured you have plenty of choices.

Dapol produces a range of powered semaphore signals replicating both home and distance signals and offer a choice between GWR lower quadrant or LMS upper. In kit-form, Ratio's signals handily come with an option to construct the model as either a home or distant signal and they also offer a kit for a two-road signal gantry. If ready-to-plant is more your cup of tea then P&D Marsh produces a range of N gauge signals that are for show only, the signal arms do not move but the beauty of these models is that they come painted with high levels of detail so they are a no-fuss solution to adding signals to your layout.

Our desire to add detail has not been forgotten either and the world around our N gauge signals can be easily enhanced. Why not add some trunking, cable drums, lineside workers, relay boxes, telegraph poles or even a crossing to make your signals the focus of attention?
