When modelling, it helps to use the right tool for the job. However, with the amount of different tools currently available, how do you know which ones are useful? Here is a selection to get you started.

One of the most basic thing you do when modelling is cutting. However, even if it is a simple task, it does not mean you should not use the right tools. Protect your desk with a cutting mat: they are self healing and are lined so you can cut straight (a metal ruler helps as well). Use a scalpel with a new blade. If a scalpel is good enough for a surgeon, it is good enough for you to cut paper, card and plastic. You need a new blade, as this will make sure your blade cuts neatly and does not slip. Blades are available in various shapes for different jobs and are very inexpensive (about 15p each). Always keep a selection of blades on your desk.

Once cut, you want to clean the material. A set of files (from flat to rounded to triangular) will usually do the job nicely. If you work in metal as well as plastic, we recommended to have a set of files for each material. If files are too coarse, you can use abrasive pads and sticks. Alternatively, you may find the fibre glass pen very useful to rub down those last imperfections.

A box of small screwdrivers is always handy when doing some maintenance on your locomotives and wagons. And a set square helps you get the right angles right (pun intended). Not even mentioning a very small hammer to get the track pins in...

To grab small bits, some tweezers will help a lot. You also need a crosslock tweezer: they open when you press and close automatically. Finally, for the very small bits, we strongly recommended a pick up tool. They come either with 3 jaws to hold the piece in place or with a sticky end for irregular shapes.

To make holes, use a pin vice with small drill bits. The pin vice is manual, giving you the most control of your drilling.
