Modellings tips and answers - How to keep the trains running perfectlyHello,

Don't forget to read our latest modelling tips located at the bottom to the bottom of the newsletter.

Keeping the track clean is paramount if you want your trains to run smoothly. After all, the power comes from the controller to the train through the track. It means if the track is dirty, the train is not going to get all the power it requires. This leads to the train acting erratically, jumping around, slowing down or even not moving at all.

There are a few products on the market for OO scale to keep your track in tip-top condition here are just some of the ones that we would recommend:

Dapol Motorised track cleaner is designed to be used in conjunction with the track cleaning fluid.

Accessories and replacement pads are also available so you know the cleaner is a safe long time investment:

Woodland Scenics do the dust monkey, which is a clever bit of kit that attaches to the axle of your rolling stock. These can be used to dust your track as the name suggests or add two to the axles of your rolling stock the front one slightly moistened with cleaning fluid and the rear one dry, mopping up any excess cleaning fluid.

Woodland Scenics also have a great rail cleaning kit and replacement cleaning pads are readily available. This can be used with OO and N gauge. Look at the videos (simply click on each picture) for more details:

Alternatively, there is the old-fashioned way: the good old tried and tested track rubber from Peco and the rail cleaner from Proses:

Finally, here are the details for the dust monkeys in N gauge:
