Hello,
Don't forget to read our latest modelling tips located at the bottom to the bottom of the newsletter.
Narrow gauge modelling in OO9 is the perfect way to tackle a small project to keep you busy over the winter period. You get the space saving benefits of N gauge while keeping the size and details of OO gauge. It also means you can use your existing OO gauge figures and buildings.
As most narrow gauge railways are used on private land, there are a lot less constraints and most operators would simply use whatever was available. This is the perfect excuse to do heavy weathering with rust everywhere!
Track is readily available from Peco, in the shape of a
starter set including a plan book and enough track for an oval and two sidings. Or you can design your own using Set Track or even flexible track. Both mainline type and "crazy track" style are represented. Simply
click on any picture for full details.
For additional quirkiness, use a steam engine as it allows you to set your layout far enough in the past, no-one will be able to complain about inaccuracies! It also makes for more variety.
Diesel engines are very reliable, cheap to run and workhouses so perfectly suitable for narrow gauge activities. One of the good things about OO9 is the fact most engines are very colourful. You will never have a dull day looking at a narrow gauge layout.
A few wagons behind your engine will set the scene and provide operational opportunities. Do you want coal to be moved up and down the valley? Or maybe chalk or slate from Wales? No wonder there are so many of them to chose from!
A few passengers are always welcome on the railway or you can go all the way in the industrial direction with a crane. You also need a
beer wagon to keep everyone hydrated! As narrow gauge is also used by the military, you find some unusual items such as this
ambulance coach.
