Modelling tips - adding a farm to your layout in N and OOHello,

Have you thought about becoming a dairy farmer? All layouts look good with expanses of green fields, but why not utilise that space by adding a farm and become a dairy farmer?

In OO gauge, Metcalfe does cardboard kits of a farmhouse, barn and cow shed. They are easy and fun to build and quite sturdy, making them ideal if you do not have much experience or if you do modelling with young ones.

Obviously a dairy farms needs cows. There are a few available already painted in OO gauge. This allows you to have a large range of different looking cows.

Or for even more variety, you can add some in HO gauge. They may look slightly smaller but in real life all cows are different sizes so it should not be a cause for concern.

And you may want to add some milk churns by the barn door or at the back of a lorry for extra realism.

You can create the same scene in N gauge, starting with the building. Metcalfe card kits are also available and as easy to build as usual:

Or you have the opportunity to use Kestrel Design in plastic if you prefer. They come separate or as a bumper set containing all buildings.

Numerous cows exist in N gauge. Once again, this allows you to fill a field or two with them without having twice the same animal.

And don't forget the churns! They may be in N gauge and very small but they are still an important part of the scene.
