Signalling your layout with semaphore signals
The idea of signals on your layout for the beginner can seem quite daunting but it is actually quite straight forward. It is basically stop and go like a traffic light.
Many railway modellers have the signals purely for show and do not actually work, but for the more experienced railway modeller, working signals are an essential part of the running of their layout.
Depending on what time period you are looking at portraying and the rail network such as GWR, LMS, LNER and SR, will denote the type of signal pole construction and in which way they operated whether it is an upper quadrant or lower quadrant.
It wasn't until the late 1940's that signalling became the same across the country when the big four became British Railways.
There are some good how to guides available which cater for all scales such as:
OO gauge semaphore signals
When it comes to signals there are several companies that produce them, such as Ratio, the signals are a plastic kit that when fitted together can be turned in to working signals or just left as static scenery.
Dapol produce a large range of working signals which are very effective. They use a servo motor under the baseboard to move the signal. Very easy to use.
N gauge semaphore signals
Ratio offers a few options in plastic to represent signals in N gauge. They are non working and require building.
There are also white metal painted signals available from P&D Marsh. Being white metal castings, these are purely for show rather than working signals.
If you need motorised and fully working signals, Dapol have them available in N gauge as well:
