Most layouts need a station so the trains can stop and if you have a station, you need at least one platform. There are several choices when it comes to adding the platforms to your layout.
In OO gauge, there are plastic and card kits from brands such as Peco, Metcalfe and Ratio, which will all add a realistic look to your station or halt with a choice of finish: brick, stone or concrete. All these platforms are designed for use with Setrack, Streamline and other types of track.
Peco have their own platform system where you can pick and choose the finish of your platform edging. They are made of plastic.
Peco also do plastic curved platforms, available in brick and stone finish.
If you prefer working with card, Metcalfe produce some amazing card kits and their platforms are no exception. They can be built straight, curved, island or bay and are available in brick or stone finish. You get 4 feet of platform in each pack.
For even more choice the plastic kit from Ratio is very nicely detailed with bricked edging.
It is a very similar story with N gauge, having card and plastic kits available from Metcalfe and Kestrel Designs and resin from Graham Farish.
