If you are just planning a layout or thinking of adding another level, these are worth thinking about as they save you having to make wooden sections. From Woodland Scenic, they are foam lengths that have been designed to create a flat surface for the track to sit on and the ability to curve making it possible to have a track half way up your mountain, with 2in. and 4in. risers. Ideal for both N Gauge and OO scale, so add another dimension to that layout.
To help you get up that hill, you can use various incline and decline sets . They save all the mess of cutting polystyrene sheets. And they take out all the guesswork of creating a smooth and flat surface to lay the track on. The starters are short lengths that will require padding while the sets are long lengths.
Please note, the lower the gradient the better if you want your engine to be able to pull a few coachs or wagons.
You might want to get some specifically designed nails just to hold things in place temporarily. When ready, simply use the foam tack glue to hold everything in place.
When you get to the desired length of foam simply cut off excess with either the foam knife or the hot wire cutter.
