Modelling tips and questions answered - how to cut plastic kits, card and decalsHello,
 
We hope you enjoyed visiting the exhibition in Lake on Saturday 1st of June and that you picked up a few ideas and tips. Talking about tips, so here are the latest ones published on our website this week:

If you are building plastic kits, be it for model railway or for a diorama, you will need a few tools. There is no more important than cutting tools to remove parts from the sprues.
 
Always check to see where the model ends and the sprue begins, before cutting, then check it again. Cut with caution.
 
The easiest and safest tool to use is a sprue cutter:
 
 
 
It goes without saying a selection of knives is also very necessary to cut parts cleanly. The heavy-duty knife from X-Acto can be used with interchangeable blades and saws.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Swann Morton’ scalpels also offer a selection of blades. These are ideal for nice clean cuts for decals and plastic.
 
 
 
 
 
For day to day jobs, Swann Morton have a choice of craft knives with suitable blades.
 
 
 

 

 

 

Obviously you need to protect your table or workbench if you are going to cut things. Always use a cutting mat: they prevent slipping and are self-healing.

As usual, if we do not have in stock what you are looking for, we will order it for you and you will get it fast (usually within a week if the manufacturer has it in stock). We place weekly orders with most suppliers.

Remember, you can park for free for one hour on the High Street. So no excuse not to come and visit us!
