Modelling tips - Exhibition on Saturday - How to make rocks and hillsHello,

Are you on the Isle of Wight on Saturday 1st of June? If so, you may want to spend an hour in Lake at the latest exhibition organised by Sandown Railway Enthusiasts Club.

It takes place from 10am till 4pm at Lake Community Centre (Lion's Club) PO36 9LA and will feature several layouts in N gauge, OO9, OO gauge and OO6.5.

This is well worth a visit for inspiration and to meet other modellers. They will welcome all your questions too!

Because we know you love them, here are the latest modelling tips published on our website:

Last week we were talking about backscenes for your layouts. This week we are going to offer an alternative to backscenes by talking about making hills and rock faces.

Many of you will have made hills using a timber frame and chicken wire and adding plaster of Paris bandages or papier mache.

There is now another alternative from Woodland Scenics called shaper sheet, just bend into the shape you require, add plaster and job done. It has a silver foil side and a fibrous side when the plaster is added to the fibrous side it sets exactly as you intend it to. Click on the image to watch a video showing how it works.

To add extra realism, create a rock face using Woodland Scenics rock Moulds. Several are available to create all types of rock formations.

These can be used with Hydrocal light, which is a lightweight plaster that doesn't shrink when dry.

It is recommended to use earth colours which have been specifically formulated to paint realistic rock formations

If you are looking for a faster result (with potentially less mess), try wrinkle rocks from Noch.

Easy to use: just crumple it up, the more wrinkles you have in the sheet the better and simply add it to your layout, stick it in place, and with a bit of foliage, job done.

This is a specially designed paper with a photo realistic image of a specific rock type. There are five to choose from:

Send us an email or give us a call to check availability or to reserve anything, whatever scale you model in. As usual, if we do not have in stock what you are looking for, we will order it for you and you will get it fast (usually within a week if the manufacturer has it in stock). We place weekly orders with most suppliers.

Remember, you can park for free for one hour on the High Street. So no excuse not to come and visit us!

Upstairs Downstairs is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am till 4.30pm and Sunday 1pm till 4pm. We are closed only on Monday.
