Easter opening - weekly tips - tail and head lamps - card kitsHello,

Another long weekend ahead, another opportunity to make good progress on your layout or to finish this plastic kit that you started years ago!

We are open as usual during the Easter weekend: open Friday and Saturday from 10am till 4.30pm and Sunday from 1pm till 4pm. This is to help you make the most of this extra long weekend: no excuse not to do any modelling!

When modelling, most people are looking for the maximum possible accuracy. If modelling steam era, there is an easy tweak that will get you a lot closer to that goal: add head lamps to the locomotives. Head lamps were used at the front of the engine to indicate to signalmen the nature of the trains (for instance express passenger train or parcels). Please note each region used a slightly different set of codes, so you are likely to want to do a bit of research.

We like the lamps from Springside as the range is large and covers all possibilities. They are also very well detailed and most of them are already painted. They also do a few extra such as brake shoes and irons. The full range in OO gauge can be seen by clicking here. Or have a look at these examples:

If you are modelling in N gauge, the range is smaller but should still answer most needs:

Nothing is more pleasing than completing a modelling kit. If you have no experience, we recommend you start with a card kit as they are usually straightforward and do not require many tools. To glue them we recommend Rocket Card Glue as it was designed for these kits, dries fast and clear. This is a lot better than a yellow tube of stringy adhesive!

Metcalfe offers the best range of card kits and are constantly releasing new items. Here is a few of our favourites while you can see the full range on our website. They offer building materials (bricks, stones, ...), large kits (station, bridge, ...) and smaller ones such as the signal box interior or the garden sheds.
