To add that extra realism to your layout why not try Dapol’s ballast weathering kits?

There are three different sets available, each coming in a nice bucket. The kits contain everything you need to weather your track to the dirty conditions caused by steam or diesel locomotives. They also offer a pot hole kit if you want to replicate an old road on your layout.

Kits include:

    • Coal dust, brake dust, track dirt and track weathering solution for steam era layouts
    • Brake dust, track dirt, and oily track weathering solution for diesel era layouts
    • Road powder, ash and brick dust for the infill of pot holes plus a bottle of weathering solution.

If you have not yet ballasted your layout, be aware you will need more ballast than you think. That's why Woodland Scenics not only offers bags but also big tubs, available in fine, medium and coarse and in various colours. The colour used on a real railway would depend on the region while cinders were usually used in sidings. Click here for the full list or here are a few examples:

Using a Proses ballast spreader will save you time and guarantees a consistent finish. They are available in OO and N gauge:

Regarding gluing, you can use watered down PVA glue but make sure it dries clear otherwise the end result may not be what you want. Alternatively, use Ballast Bond which is specifically designed for it and is the right consistency. Deluxe Materials also offers powdered glue in their Ballast Magic kit. This is mess free and very easy to use.
