Hello,

This week we had several contributions on our Facebook page. The first one is from Matt who has painted an LNER W1 (nicknamed a "Galloping Sausage"). Click on the picture for full details.

Then we have Keith who has managed to fit a sound decoder inside Hornby's tiny Peckett. Look at the video to hear how impressive this sounds.

And Paul who has painted a German tank.

Feel free to do like them and share your work on our Facebook page. And if you do not have Facebook, simply email us your pictures!

Kit building is great but sometimes the kits are not exactly what you had in mind or require. Scratch-building is awesome but requires skills and knowledge which you may not have yet. The Craftsman series from Wills bridges the gap: they are complete kiits which are designed to teach you scratch-building.

In each box you get the raw materials (sheets of brick or stone walls, sheets of slates, doors, windows, etc...) as well as scale building plans and clear instructions on what to do. This allows you to substantially modify each building to suit your requirements and teaches you how everything goes together.

Available for OO gauge, there are 13 kits in total covering all aspects. Here are a few examples:

Scratch-building is usually not really an option in N gauge due to the size of the models., unless you have lots of experience. However there are lots of kits available which can be combined together or be modified to give you the perfect building. One such range is Kestrel Design, which offers more than 50 kits. Here are a few of them:

If you build any of the kits above, we strongly suggest you use a decent adhesive. For plastic, we recommend Plastic Magic. Technically it is not a glue but a solvent and as such melts the plastic together, giving you a seamless joint.

Suitable for all gauges, we have received the latest free Railway Magazine Guide to Modelling. This is the March issue. As usual, you get collect it for free from the shop or we can post it to you if you "order it" from our website.

We also have a few copies left of the February issue which covers the following:

The article on NEM couplings is definitely worth reading. It is full of details on the standard as well as great pictures and information.

Finally, you will be glad to know that we reopen on Sundays from next week, February 5th. So you can again visit us on Sunday from 1pm till 4pm.

Send us an email or give us a call to check availability or to reserve anything, whatever scale you model in. As usual, if we do not have in stock what you are looking for, we will order it for you and you will get it fast (usually within a week if the manufacturer has it in stock). We place weekly orders with most suppliers.

Remember, you can park for free for one hour on the High Street and for as long as want on the Esplanade. So no excuse not to come and visit us!

Upstairs Downstairs is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am till 4.30pm and Sunday 1pm till 4pm. We are closed only on Monday.
