Hello,

We have made several improvements to our website this week. The first one is a change of the homepage. Please click here to be taken to our website and let us know what you think: is it clearer or more confusing? Can we improve things and if so, how? Comments and ideas welcome either by email or on our Facebook page.

Following several requests, we have also added the ability to place the order on the website and pay by phone. This is the best thing to do if you are worried about using your card online or if you do not want to use Paypal. The process is simple: you order on the website as usual and once you have completed the order, simply select "pay by phone". This also saves you having to give us the part numbers over the phone.

A couple of weeks ago, we spoke about semaphore signals (if you have missed it, you can access past newsletter here). We showed all the options available to model them statically on a layout.

Dapol has been offering for the past few years a whole range of motorised semaphore signals. They operate very easily and require only a 16V AC power supply, that is the same you would use to power lights or point motors. Then every time you push a switch, the arm goes up or down. This approach allows you to fully automate the signals using a simple reed switch under the track: when the train reaches the switch, it activates the signal and moves the arm.

The comprehensive range of signals is available in OO gauge and includes lower quadrant and upper quadrant, home and distant.

They are also available in N gauge with the same variety:

If you operate on DCC, you can use the Train Tech signal controller to operate one or two signals.

Finally, if you need to brush up on how signals work in real life so you can mimic it on your layout, this booklet from Peco is a must-have.

Send us an email or give us a call to check availability or to reserve anything, whatever scale you model in. As usual, if we do not have in stock what you are looking for, we will order it for you and you will get it fast (usually within a week if the manufacturer has it in stock). We place weekly orders with most suppliers.

Remember, you can park for free for one hour on the High Street and for as long as want on the Esplanade. So no excuse not to come and visit us!

Upstairs Downstairs is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am till 4.30pm and Sunday from 1pm till 4pm. We are closed on Monday and Sunday.
