Hello,
Please note, if you have missed our newsletter last week about new catalogues and semaphore signals, it is available here.
Water is a great feature on any layout or diorama and in any scale. This picture of a layout by Caroline Cleaveley shows what can be achieved with a a bit of inspiration. You can click on the picture to be taken to our Facebook page where you will see more pictures of her great layout. We do welcome your pictures! Simply email them to us and we will happily share them with other modellers.
The way you do water depends on several things: the type of water (moving or still, deep or shallow, etc.) and how realistic you need it to be.
If you are looking for an all in one solution, the water kit from Woodland Scenics is a good choice: it includes not only the water but all the tools and paint needed to create a pond, puddles or a little river. On a similar token, the set from Busch allows you to create several ponds and include leaves, lilipads, reeds, a footbridge, etc.
If you want to create a vast expanse of flat water, E-Z Water is probably the best choice: simply heat it up, pour it and wait for it to harden. You can also use Realistic Water which is ready to use.
For waves and fast moving waters, products are available from Woodland Scenics and Deluxe Materials. They will allow you to "sculpt" the water, creating crests and other features. Waterfalls can be better created using Scenic Fibres to support them.
For small quantities (say in glasses, fish tanks etc.), Scenic Water is the way to go. You can add food colouring to it to create special effects.
Vallejo also offers a solution in the shape of Water Texture. This can be moulded to shape or sculpted in order to represent rivers, waves and peaks.
Finally, if you are looking for a quick solution for water, you can also find sheets of water. The large ones for Busch are made of two layers and as such catch the sunlight or other light sources better, while the small ones are cheaper but "flatter".
Send us an email or give us a call to check availability or to reserve anything, whatever scale you model in. As usual, if we do not have in stock what you are looking for, we will order it for you and you will get it fast (usually within a week if the manufacturer has it in stock). We place weekly orders with most suppliers.
Remember, you can park for free for one hour on the High Street and for as long as you want on the Esplanade. So no excuse not to come and visit us!
Upstairs Downstairs is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am till 4.30pm, Sunday from 1pm till 4pm. We are closed only on Monday.
