Hello,

Lots of reaction this week on our Facebook page with the following image. It looks like lots of modellers agree with it! If you want to react to it or share it with friends and family, feel free to click on it to be taken to Facebook.

The use of signals on railways is nothing new: the semaphore signal dates from 1841! No layout would be a true depiction of the railways without signals.

Hopefully the matter is well catered for in all gauges. This week, we are going to focus on non-motorised semaphore signals. If you need to brush up on how signals operate, we strongly suggest the following booklet. As usual, click on any picture for full details.

In OO gauge, Ratio has a full range of kits covering all types you might need, from LMS home to SR distant and anything in between. Ground signals are also available. Kits are either white metal or plastic and can be operated using a remote control system which works roughly like the real thing (you pull a lever and it moves the signal).

More complex needs are also answered with junction signals, brackets and gantry. If it exists in real life, you should be able to replicate it in OO gauge.

In N gauge, the best range is from P & D Marsh. Their signals are already built and painted and of quite good quality.

Basic N gauge needs can also be answered by Ratio with two plastic kits, offering you distant or home signal and a gantry. This gives you the flexibility of setting them the way you require.

Send us an email or give us a call to check availability or to reserve anything, whatever scale you model in. As usual, if we do not have in stock what you are looking for, we will order it for you and you will get it fast (usually within a week if the manufacturer has it in stock). We place weekly orders with most suppliers.

Remember, you can park for free for one hour on the High Street and for as long as want on the Esplanade. So no excuse not to come and visit us!

Upstairs Downstairs is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am till 4.30pm. We are closed on Monday and Sunday.
