Railway song of the week

All Aboard by Karla Kane is a charming, whimsical indie pop track that reflects her distinctive storytelling style and gentle, melodic sound. Based in California, Kane is best known as the frontwoman of the indie band The Corner Laughers, as well as for her solo work and collaborations within the Bay Area’s indie music scene, often blending elements of British-influenced pop with acoustic textures like ukulele. In All Aboard, her warm, expressive vocals glide over light, playful instrumentation, while the lyrics invite listeners on a small imaginative journey, celebrating curiosity, creativity and the joy of embracing life’s quieter adventures. This week in history

In March 1967, the Isle of Wight railway reopened after a period of closure to allow for electrification works to be carried out using ex-London Underground stock to operate the service.

Picks of the week

If you're modelling in HO gauge, the Spectrum Birney Safety Streetcar is an absolute gem. This tram comes fully DCC-equipped with working lights and a detailed interior and it's in immaculate condition looking as though it's barely turned a wheel. For those of you working in N gauge, the Minitrix Class BR 03 054 is a lovely German express locomotive that's been fully serviced and tested. Meanwhile, in OO gauge, the Hornby Duchess class 'City of Bristol' represents the pinnacle of British steam power and comes with two matching blood and custard coaches, a complete train ready to grace your layout.

Staying with OO gauge, if you're after something for your freight yard or station throat, the Hornby Class 08 Shunter is just the ticket. These ubiquitous little workhorses were everywhere on British Railways and this example in BR green comes with three Railfreight wagons to get you started on your freight operations. The Lima Class 50 is another OO gauge locomotive that's been fully serviced and runs beautifully. If you're building an N gauge layout and need to expand your trackwork, the set of eight Peco curved track pieces will create a complete circle on No.1 radius, and they're in very good used condition with all fishplates present and correct.

Creating ambience for your hotel

In real life, many railway stations have a hotel nearby, therefore, many layouts also feature a hotel. But if you want to make a feature of your hotel, where do you start?

There are several good models of hotels available for 00 gauge, a good example is Superquick's 'Railway Hotel' card kit that looks just as good in a town as it does in the countryside. Once you have chosen or built a hotel that suits your needs, you can start to work on the details. Think specifically about the hotel's grounds, they don't have to be massive to incorporate details such as signage, a few tables and chairs for guests to relax at or some ornamental features such as a birdbath, sundial or some planters. If you choose you could even anchor your hotel to a specific location, for example, think small car park complete with tour bus and a smattering of palm trees and your mind immediately thinks of Torquay.

Once your hotel has a physical identity, it's time to think about what sort of activity would be taking place there. You could add some beer barrels waiting to be put away in the cellar, reception staff greeting and helping customers, travellers arriving from their long journeys, taxis picking up guests or a gardener tending to the flower beds. Planting your hotel properly and demonstrating a little bit of activity can really help bring it to life and truly make it a feature to be proud of on your layout!
