Railway song of the week

Reader Mick Parker contacted us to suggest The Last Train performed by the English band The Movies dating from the mid 70’s. In his own words "Brilliant track by a much missed band" however this last comment may stem from his confession: he was the keyboard player. Please note The Movies was Joan Armatrading's band without Joan.

This week in history

On March 19th 1924, the Baldwin Locomotive works completed the last commercially manufactured locomotive for the Maine narrow-gauge railway.

Picks of the Week

Starting with some impressive steam power, we have the Bachmann Class V2 "Green Arrow" in BR black. This split chassis model is in remarkably good condition and represents Sir Nigel Gresley's versatile express mixed traffic design from the 1930s. If you fancy something a bit more compact, the Wrenn Class N2 Tank in LMS plain black livery numbered 2385 is a late P3 version that's been fully serviced and runs excellently despite showing some honest playwear. For those of you modelling in the larger O gauge, there's a real treat in the form of a John Kennerley scratch-built ventilated wagon in LNER livery. Kennerley was a master modeller whose work is highly sought after, and this white metal wagon from 1972 features all the lovely details you'd expect: vacuum pipes, brake lines, and proper hook and chain couplings.

Moving into the diesel era, we've got some proper heavyweight machinery for you. The Hornby Class 59 "Village of Chantry" in ARC livery is fitted with DCC and in excellent condition, showing minimal signs of running. If electric traction is more your cup of tea, the Lima Class 92 "Beethoven" in two-tone grey is a cracking example. These dual-voltage locomotives were specifically designed for Channel Tunnel operations, and this one's in excellent nick. Rounding off our diesel selection is the Heljan Class 45 in BR green. This DCC Ready model is in exceptional as-new condition with working lights and features the split headcodes and no yellow front end typical of the early 'Peak' class locomotives.

Market Stalls and Interior Scenes

When you're building a model railway layout or diorama, it's the small details that truly bring your miniature world to life. Whilst locomotives and buildings form the backbone of any scene, it's the people going about their daily business that add that essential spark of realism. Preiser has developed an excellent range of market stall sets that capture the bustling atmosphere of street food and produce vendors perfectly. Their Potato Sales Stand features two figures ready to sell their fresh produce, whilst the Doner Kebab Sales Stand brings a taste of modern street food culture with five figures including two workers and three hungry customers. For those with a sweet tooth, the Sweets Sales Stand includes three figures - one vendor and two customers - all carefully hand-painted and ready to populate your market scene or station forecourt.

Continuing with the market theme, you'll find even more variety to add character to your street scenes. The Snack Point Sales Stand by Preiser is another cracking set featuring five figures: two workers serving up tasty treats and three customers queuing for their orders. If you're after something a bit more traditional, the Cheese Sales Stand includes three figures depicting a vendor and two customers, perfect for adding that continental market feel. For a more modern touch, Preiser's 'At the Vending Machine' set brings contemporary life to your station platforms or bus stops with four customers and two vending machines, all fully painted and ready to place.

Whilst outdoor scenes are brilliant fun to create, you might also want to show what's happening inside the buildings on your layout. Noch has developed a superb range of themed interior sets that include both figures and furniture. Their 'Dining Room' set is particularly charming, featuring a family of four with a fully laid table, chairs, shelf, chest of drawers and even a door: everything you need to create a cosy family mealtime scene. The 'Children's Room' set captures the playful chaos of family life with a mother, two children, a bunk bed, chest of drawers and various toys. For a more relaxed atmosphere, the 'Living Room' set depicts a man in an armchair and a couple on the sofa, complete with wall unit, coffee table and television.

Noch's interior range doesn't stop there: they've thought of every room in the house! The 'Kitchen' set brings culinary life to your models with a woman cooking and a man holding a drink, alongside detailed kitchen units, cooker, sink, fridge and extractor fan. The 'Bedroom' set shows everyday domestic life with a man getting dressed and a woman folding laundry, complete with bed, bedside tables, wardrobe and dressing table. Rounding off the collection, the 'Bathroom' set features a man with a towel and a woman relaxing in the bathtub, with shower, toilet, bidet, washbasin and bathroom cabinet all included. Each of these sets is meticulously hand-painted and includes a door, making them perfect for creating detailed interior scenes visible through the windows of your model buildings.
