Railway song of the week
"Train in the Distance" is a hauntingly beautiful ballad by Paul Simon, featured on his 1983 album Hearts and Bones, a deeply personal and introspective work that blends folk, pop and world music influences. The song uses the distant sound of a train as a powerful metaphor for longing, separation and the passage of time, with Simon's poetic lyrics and delicate fingerpicked guitar creating an atmosphere of melancholy and nostalgia. Written during a period of personal upheaval in Simon's life, including the end of his marriage to Carrie Fisher (better known as Princess Leia from Star Wars) the track stands out for its emotional depth and atmospheric production, evoking the ache of missed connections and the inevitability of change. This week in history
On the 30th of August 1906, the Great Western Railway opened its Fishguard Harbour railway station in
Pembrokeshire, Wales. The station was part of GWR's plan to take
trans-Atlantic passenger traffic away from the ports of Southampton and
Plymouth, the first such service used the port just three years later.
Step back in time with some truly regal offerings from the world of OO gauge model railways. Imagine the excitement of unboxing Hornby's "The Royal Train" complete set, featuring the majestic 4-6-2 "Princess Elizabeth" locomotive in LMS maroon, pulling Her Majesty The Queen's personal saloon car and the Duke of Edinburgh's personal saloon. This set, in pristine "as new" condition, allows you to recreate a slice of royal railway history right in your own home.
Rounding off this royal and refined selection is "The Caledonian" limited edition train set, featuring a British Rail King George VI Princess Coronation Class locomotive with matching coaches, perfect for recreating the golden age of rail travel.
For those with a penchant for the more industrial side of rail transport, consider the trio of weathered 14-ton tank wagons in 'ESSO' black
livery from Bachmann. These highly detailed models, numbered 1343,
1945, and 1921, would add a touch of gritty realism to any layout.
For those of you who appreciate the evolution of locomotive design, the Heljan English Electric DP2 Prototype in late BR green livery is a must-see. This DCC-fitted model represents a fascinating chapter in British railway history, bridging the gap between the famous Deltics and the later Class 50s. Its unique appearance, with large bodyside radiator vents and single roof fan, sets it apart from its contemporaries.
Town centre this way, in card!
In previous newsletters, we have explored the diversity of village
housing and the large range of farm buildings available in cardboard
kit form from Metcalfe and Superquick, but what about the town (or
village) centre? this is often the most characterful part and therefore
the most desirable aspect to model (apart from the railway station that
is!). Well, worry not, because there are plenty of OO gauge cardboard
kits representing all parts of a town or village, including its centre,
and it's hard not to get inspired by distinctive and iconic buildings
such as town halls, village churches and of course, the obligatory public house. Throw in a few convenience stores and ideas for a town centre should be starting to take shape.

But as wonderful and representative as these models are, you may be looking for something a little different. If so, have you considered installing a library, village school, fire station or garage?
even a shop with a more unusual purpose will help give your village its
own identity, and all of these can easily be modelled in card.
