Railway song of the week

"Slow Train" is the opening track from Kevin Morby’s 2013 debut solo album, Harlem River. Emerging after his time with Woods and The Babies, this song marks the beginning of Morby’s journey as a solo artist and it sets the tone with moody introspection and a dusty, poetic sense of Americana.

This week in history

On the 6th of August 1900, after less than two years in operation, the failing Aberlady, Gullane and North Berwick Railway, East Lothian, Scotland,  was absorbed into the North British Railway company. It then became part of LNER in 1923.

Picks of the week

Starting with the steam era, we have a delightful trio of Esso tank wagons from Bachmann Branchline. These weathered beauties in OO gauge would add authentic detail to any goods yard or industrial siding. For those modelling the Southern Railway, the Wrenn 0-6-0 tank engine in Southern green livery is a real gem. It's been properly stored and recommissioned, ready to pull your freight or shunt wagons. Rounding out our steam selection is the Hornby Drummond Class 700 0-6-0 in BR black. This "Black Motor" is in as-new condition and would make an excellent addition to your late BR steam fleet.

Moving into the modern era, we have a Class 70 from Bachmann Branchline. This DCC-fitted Freightliner locomotive is lightly weathered and ready to haul your container trains. For those modelling European railways, there's a lovely set of three Swiss Federal Railway coaches from Roco and Fleischmann. These HO gauge coaches are in excellent condition and would look splendid behind a Swiss locomotive. Lastly, for narrow gauge enthusiasts, we have a Spectrum 2-6-0 locomotive and tender in ON30 gauge. This little beauty is as-new and would be perfect for a small logging or mining layout.

Allotments and flowers

Allotments have a heritage that dates back as far as Anglo Saxon times but have been a mainstay of the British since the 19th century when land was given to the labouring poor, they have been a feature of our suburbs ever since.

Harburn Hamlet is a Scottish brand that produces resin models in 00/H0 gauge including an allotment range that's painted and ready to plant (excuse the pun) onto the layout.

The models are well detailed with desirable attention to detail such as the fallen plant pot and water-butt behind a shed on their "Allotment section with shed, cold frames etc" model.

Their unfortunately named "Beekeeper with hives" (poor chap!) depicts a beekeeper tending to his bees, arguably a lesser modelled scenario but what a great idea for some original scenic interest!

In addition to their mini-cameo scenes, Harburn also have a good offering of traditional individual allotment features such as a vegetable plot, rows of rhubarb, free-range hen house and of course the obligatory allotment shed!

Turning our attention to N gauge, Tasma Products manufactures some of the very best models of allotment and homegrown produce on the market. Their portrayals are nothing short of spectacular and they've got it just right with their use of colours and texture.

Our favourite is their tomato plants which are presented growing on canes, such a simple idea but it's those details that make the difference between a model and a very convincing model.

Other Tasma homegrown produce that stands out for visual appeal include their hydrangeas, climbing roses, delphiniums and strawberry plants, but the crowning glory surely has to be their apple trees. Great work Tasma, keep it up!
