Railway song of the week

Originally released in 1966, "Train Song" by English singer Vashti Bunyan is a delicate and haunting piece of British folk that captures the wistful romance and quiet melancholy often associated with travel by train. With her soft, almost ethereal voice and a sparse acoustic arrangement, Bunyan evokes the feeling of drifting through misty landscapes, lost in memory and longing. Though it remained relatively obscure for many years, the song has since been recognised as a hidden gem of the 1960s folk revival, offering you a gentle, dreamlike journey through sound and emotion. Well worth a listen by clicking here or on the picture.

This week in history

On 1st May 1928, a new non-stop service was commenced by London North Eastern Railway running the 393 miles to Edinburgh Waverley from London King's Cross. This service used LNER Gresley Class A1 4-6-2 locomotives with tenders to permit crew changes en-route. The initial service from King's Cross was conducted by the locomotive 4472 Flying Scotsman.

Do you have one?

The Vacuum Pipe Magnetic NEM Coupling Pack is the ideal accessory for enhancing Big Four era and BR Mark 1 and 2 coaches. Designed to replace the bulky tension lock couplings, these magnetic couplings more accurately replicate the appearance of vacuum pipes typically seen between coaches on the UK mainlines. They also bring the coaches closer together, significantly improving the realism of any rake. Each pack contains eight (8) pairs.

OO Fencing and N gauge coaches

When it comes to fencing, Busch offers a variety of options to suit different settings. Their old picket fence kit provides 130cm of weathered charm, perfect for adding character to rural scenes. For a more industrial look, consider their metal industrial fencing, featuring fine aluminum lattice for a realistic appearance. If you're after a versatile option, the 130cm country fencing kit allows you to build fences at various angles, ideal for adapting to your layout's terrain.

Their 37cm picket fence kit is perfect for smaller areas or creating short sections of fencing. For a more modern look, the wire mesh fence kit provides 100cm of green garden fencing, complete with metal doors and posts. If you need a longer run of picket fencing, the 120cm picket fencing kit offers over 120cm of fencing with four gates, giving you plenty of options for your layout.

Moving on to rolling stock, Dapol offers some fantastic N gauge Collett coaches to add authenticity to your GWR or BR Western Region layouts. Their BR Second Maroon W1080W coach features highly detailed bodywork and fine livery application. For variety, consider adding the BR Second Maroon W506W, which shares the same attention to detail. If you're modelling an earlier period, the Chocolate and Cream Third Class coach with the 'Shirtbutton' logo is a great choice, capturing the classic GWR look.

To complete your Collett coach rake, don't forget to include a brake composite. Dapol's BR Brake Composite Maroon W6706W is an excellent choice, featuring the same high level of detail as the other coaches in the range. For those modelling the GWR era, the Chocolate and Cream Composite coach with the Great Western crest is a must-have. And if you're looking for something a bit different, why not consider adding a Graham Farish GWR Hawksworth Auto-Trailer in BR Maroon to your collection? It's perfect for branch line operations and will add variety to your rolling stock.

With these fencing options and beautiful Collett coaches, you'll be well on your way to creating a detailed and authentic-looking layout.
