Twice as big, twice as exciting, twice as inspiring. This is how I want to describe WightRail 2014 which will be held this weekend (Saturday and Sunday) at Medina Leisure Centre in Newport. They have doubled the size and will host more than 20 layouts and more than 10 traders. If you can find some time to go there, this is well worth going as this is going to be the largest ever exhibition to be held on the Island. So go there and let us know what you enjoyed!

Please note, we will NOT have a stall there as this is not practical for us, however Upstairs Downstairs will be open as usual on Saturday 10am till 4.30pm and Sunday 1pm till 4pm. So you can visit us after or before going there. Also, if you are exhibiting, I am sure we will find a way to come and check on your work during the weekend!

Sound has always been expensive however there are now alternative to paying £250 for a locomotive: we mentioned in the past the excellent Train Tech sound capsule, allowing you to add sound to any locomotive for only a very reasonable price and this does not require to upgrade to DCC either. Please note, we still have our demo unit in the shop so just ask if you want to hear what this sounds like. This is OO gauge however some customers have reported using the capsule with N gauge by simply strapping it on a flat wagon as a "special" load.

In OO gauge, you also have the option to get DCC Sound fitted locomotives from Hornby for only £20 more than the equivalent locomotive without sound. We were quite surprised because we were expecting the locomotive to be based on the cheap railroad version and in fact they are based on the fully detailed one. At the moment we have the following two locomotives in stock: 4-6-2 Duke of Gloucester and Peppercorn Tornado in blue livery. We have been able to secure very limited quantities of them, so if you are interested, let us know as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

We are coming to the end of the year, so we need to make a bit of space for new releases coming next year. We have then decided to clear a few items, starting with the 2014 catalogues. You can get the 2014 Hornby catalogue for less than half price and the Airfix / Humbrol 2014 catalogue for a mere £2.50. This is great as reference material or to illustrate your collection. We are likely to also do the same with other catalogues as soon as we find the time. Once again, as this is to clear some space, once they are sold, they will not be replenished.

As usual, if we do not have in stock what you are looking for, we will order it for you and you will get it fast (usually within a week if the manufacturer has it in stock). We place weekly orders with most suppliers.

Remember, you can park for free for one hour on the High Street. And the car park in York Road is still free every Tuesday from 1pm so you can spend the afternoon with us. So no excuse not to come and visit us!

Upstairs Downstairs is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am till 4.30pm, Sunday from 1pm till 4pm. We are closed only on Monday.
